Michigan Oaks
Suburban Neighborhood in Grand Rapids, Michigan
Kent County 49503, 49505, 49506
Styles from every decade of the past century
Ranch-style homes with brick facades sit alongside Colonial Revivals and Cape Cods with colorful vinyl and decorative shutters. "It's not one of those cookie-cutter neighborhoods where every fourth house has the same floor plan. The homes are quaint and have interesting architecture," Karczewski says. Marshy areas, lakes and dense tree lines act as a sound buffer from the industrial area in the north and add some vegetational variety. Significantly more expensive than the Grand Rapids average, houses range between $350,000 and $900,000, depending on size, lots and location. Houses last less than two weeks on the market, and those bordering the lakes are especially hard to get. "It took me two years to get my house. It didn't even hit the market," Karczewski says. Steadily growing since the 1930s, Michigan Oaks has homes of every style, and townhouses are available, ranging between $300,000 and $400,000.Petite lakes and sports parks
Those lucky enough to have a yard that backs up to one of the small lakes can enjoy the calm waters free of motors. Great for fishing and kayaking, the lakes can only be accessed by private docks. Manhattan Park offers more inclusive activity with tennis courts and volleyball courts just 1 mile south of Michigan Oaks. The baseball diamonds and soccer fields get plenty of attention, too. With a day pass, residents can check out the 158-acre regional attraction, Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. About 2 miles northeast of the neighborhood, the spot boasts the nation's largest temporary tropical butterfly exhibition. Other highlights include a woodland garden, around 300 permanent sculptures and a 15,000-square-foot conservatory. Outdoor Concerts occur every Tuesday from June to August, and any resident can attend with a ticket.Competitive athletics at the high school
Grand Rapids School District is a district of choice, meaning families can choose their educational path and attend neighborhood or themed schools. Kent Hills Elementary is where many begin learning and is rated a C-minus by Niche. Riverside Middle School also receives a C-minus, and Union High rounds out the bunch with a C. With over 17 teams and programs, the high school takes pride in its athletics department and active students.Secluded, not far
Buses stop along Lakeside Drive, but the area is car-dependent for getting to work or running errands. Michigan Street leads 5 miles to downtown, and onramps to Interstate 196 make getting to the rest of Western Michigan simple. A Train track intersects the area, separating the homes from the industrial area. The track and the area around it are prone to flooding, given the rolling hills and dense soil of the area that is not ideal for draining. Blodgett Hospital is 2 miles southwest, and Gerald R. Ford International Airport is 9 miles southeast.Dining out in Gaslight Village
An industrial train track, warehouses, and distribution facilities are on the neighborhood's northern end, and the mainly residential area has limited shopping or dining. Fortunately, Gaslight Village is under 2 miles south and is the destination for locally-owned restaurants and boutique stores. The petite village is picturesque, with tree-lined cobblestone walkways, two-story buildings and outdoor seating outside the little eateries. Bowdie's Chophouse is the date-night spot, serving steaks and seafood from a din-lit swanky interior. Rose's offers more casual dining along Reeds Lake. Patrons can enjoy handhelds, pasta and house-made potato chips on the outdoor waterside patio overlooking the marina's docked boats. Aldi and Meijer are 3 miles north along Beltline Ave. Residents with a green thumb visit Romence Gardens & Greenhouses. This family-owned store has provided unique and quality plants for the community since 1934. "We were here before the houses of the area were," says Katey Romence, the third-generation co-owner. "We also have an ice cream parlor that the locals love."
