Roosevelt Park
Suburban Neighborhood in Grand Rapids, Michigan
Kent County 49503
Big and small colorful homes
Hall Street runs from east to west, dividing the neighborhood layout and architectural disposition into two. Small bungalows and Cape Cods make up the southern half, sitting on evenly spaced lots with skinny driveways that lead to petite lawns. Detached garages accompany the houses, which range between $150,000 and $200,000. Homes in the northern end offer more square footage and architectural diversity. American Foursquare, new traditional and Craftsman homes with large porches can reach upwards of $275,000. With a median single-family price of $180,000, the houses are less expensive than the Grand Rapids median by $100,00 and sell after only eight days on the market.Year-round fun at the park
Summertime fills the neighborhood's many parks with activity. The namesake, Roosevelt Park, has a playground and fitness equipment to enjoy on sunny days and a hilly field to sled down once the inevitable winter snow comes. 1 mile west of the neighborhood hood is Marquette Park, where athletes can get active on the basketball courts and baseball diamond, and dog owners can play fetch in an enclosed space. Thanks to efforts from the neighborhood association and considerate residents taking part in cleanup events, the green spaces are lush and debris-free.Bicultural learning right next to home
Proximity to inclusive schools is of the utmost importance for residents of Rosevelt Park, given the area's young population. "We are the most youthful neighborhood in Grand Rapids," Brower says. "Nearly half of the residents are under 17, so having safe roads and crosswalks is important." Those young students can walk to Southwest Elementary School, which is rated a C-minus by Niche. Bilingual and bicultural experiences are the foundation of education at the campus, and students can continue the learning structure in town. Southwest Middle High School serves seventh through twelfth grade and has yet to be rated by Niche, given its newness.Fiestas and family-focused events
A few non-profits and organizations operate out of the neighborhood, including The Hispanic Center of Western Michigan and the Roosevelt Park Neighborhood Association. Active in the community, they care deeply about their residents. "We had an area-specific plan that collected data for over a year," Brower says. "It was a push for community engagement and to see what the neighbors like and want to see in the future. The biggest insight we received was that everyone valued how diverse the area is." The association is in its eleventh year of hosting Family Fiesta, an event that brings together 300 to 400 people over music, games, giveaways and food.A short drive to downtown activity
The area's main road, Cesar E Chavez Ave, leads directly into the heart of downtown. Commuters can drive the short 2 miles or take one of the buses along it. According to Brower, the houses bordering the highway and the train yard can expect a decent amount of noise. However, the city is resigning the strip of highway, and the neighborhood association hopes to get more buffers and trees along it to reduce sound. Trinity Health is the nearest hospital downtown, and Gerald R. Ford International Airport is 15 miles southeast.Enjoying tacos on a bright patio
As the main strip gets a serious facelift, restaurants continue to set up shop along it. "Roosevelt Park is culturally rich. The population is predominantly Latino, and you can see that reflected in the restaurants and small businesses in the area," Brower says. Sabor Latino serves Caribbean take-out from a no-frills space with cases keeping savory empanadas hot. After gaining significant popularity, Tacos El Cuñado opened its second location, Tacos El Cuñado 2, in Roosevelt Park. Fittingly painted lime green, the restaurant and its sunny patio are brimming with customers enjoying a quick lunch. Convenience stores and colorful murals line the road, and Rodriguez Supermarket is the go-to spot for groceries. For a change of pace and cuisine, coffee lovers can head to MudPenny café, and order spins on classic breakfast meals in the bright and airy space.Crime
The area's overall CAP Index score is 7 out of 10, with every category rating above average. Robbery rates highest, with a score of 9 out of 10.
