Family-friendly Shawnee Park is near several schools
Shawnee Park is located on the southeast side of Grand Rapids, where homes are tucked away from the city bustle and prices are a little less expensive. It’s a unique spot thanks to a high concentration of schools, including four faith-based schools and three public schools within a mile radius. “It’s a great place to raise a family,” says Brad Mockabee, principal of the local Grand Rapids Christian High School and Shawnee Park resident. “You see kids walking or biking to school all the time.” Train tracks run by the neighborhood's south side, seperating it from the Indian Trails Golf Course. Although the wooded streets feel quiet, some of the city’s most popular shopping hubs are less than a mile away.
Homes, apartments and condos on quiet streets
Shawnee Park has a suburban feel, complete with winding streets, sidewalks and mature trees. Most homes were built in the 1950s and ’60s, including a variety of ranch-style, split-level and bi-level homes. Prices range from $250,000 to $350,000 for smaller homes and between $400,000 to $600,000 for larger four-bedroom properties. The neighborhood also has several apartment buildings and condominium complexes. Condo units range from $175,000 to $250,000. Monthly condo fees are typically around $350. A small creek running through the neighborhood has a slight flooding risk, though most properties are unaffected.

Connecting with major highways is the quickest way downtown
Downtown Grand Rapids and the city’s major hospitals are 10 miles away, and the quickest way to get there is often by connecting with Interstate 196 or U.S. Route 131. The Rapids bus has a few lines through Shawnee Park, although reaching downtown is a 45-minute ride. The 28th Street corridor is often busy, especially during rush hour, but homes are shielded from the road noise. Being on this side of the city means shorter trips to the airport, 6 miles away.
