A welcoming, wacky rural neighborhood south of Grants Pass

In the 1970s, the back-to-land movement attracted hippies to Williams, and this peaceful, rural community has maintained its free-spirited vibe ever since. Over the years, its residents have included a talking crow named Cosmo and Sugarbob, a marijuana-munching deer who lived in a hotel. “It’s like Shangri-La,” says Paula Sepolpo, broker at Pine-Rok Realty and Williams resident, likening Williams to the mythical utopia in Tibet. “You almost have to know someone who lives there in order to know it’s there; it’s so far off the beaten path. It’s community-oriented even though there are different kinds of folks: retired, counterculture, organic ranchers and wonderful folks who work outside the area and come home to Shangri-La.” The neighborhood has less than 1,200 residents and is 19 miles south of Grants Pass.

Hiking the Grayback Mountain Trail

Williams includes large swaths of forested, hilly land, especially in the western part of the neighborhood. Creeks flow through green pastures and under blue skies, and terrain flattens out in the middle of the community where the main roads run. Streets are dead quiet with no traffic, and the natural landscape consists of forests and farmland. The closest park is 18 miles east. The 88-acre Cantrall Buckley County Park has barbecue pits, a playground and access to the Applegate River. Park-goers can take a dip in the cool water and pick blackberries. About 5 miles south is Grayback Mountain Trail, a remote and challenging route through the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. Hikers ascend about 4,000 feet and traverse more than 18 miles roundtrip as they pass by wildflowers or fall foliage, depending on the season. “Williams is luscious – one of the prettiest places I’ve ever been in my life,” Sepolpo says. “People who come here on vacation say, why’d we leave?”

Sipping wine and strolling through the farmers market

Between the farmers market and the local winery, fun in Williams revolves around its agriculture. Every Monday, musicians, vendors and residents convene at the Williams Farmers Market, which hosts occasional community events, like homemade salsa making contests. Plaisance Ranch, established in 1858 by French immigrants, produces organic beef and wine and hosts wine clubs and private events. Throughout the summer, hundreds of wine lovers gather at the monthly Wine Down event, a party in the barn featuring wine by the glass or the bottle, live bands and no cover charge.

The traditional small-town Williams General Store

Locally owned through the generations, Williams General Store has served the area since 1897. Its wooden building has a bench on the front porch underneath an awning that’s been there since the beginning. It sells organic produce, alcoholic beverages and a selection of meats and cheeses, so folks don’t need to drive up to the chain grocery stores in Grants Pass.

Just up the road from the general store, Takubeh Natural Market & Agricultural Supply offers local discounts. Whether shoppers are home gardeners or vineyard owners, they can usually find what they need at this woman- and indigenous-owned market. Goods range from custom soils to chicken feed to organic produce, providing nutrition for plants, pets and people. For a night out, Rascal’s Bar & Grill is the only bar in Williams. It hosts karaoke nights and is open until 2 a.m. The restaurant features a firepit, sports memorabilia and pool table, giving it a cozy yet social atmosphere. It’s known for its burgers and Korean food, which is served on Thursdays and Fridays.

Most famous resident was a weed-chomping deer

Williams is a hippie town, through and through. The area around the quirky village hit the big time in 2013, when Gordon Ramsay visited the Applegate River Lodge for an episode of “Hotel Hell.” Owner Richard Davis showed Ramsay his operations, including its regular dance parties, where people gathered at night to dance to live music while wearing mushroom costumes. Two years later, the Daily Show came to town because they’d heard about Sugarbob, the inn’s resident pot-eating deer. For those worried about Sugarbob’s weed consumption, his human companion Richard “Pa Butt” Davis told Williamette Week in 2014 that it was fine, and that he was doing it legally anyway by proxy with Davis’ medical marijuana card. The lodge is now under new ownership and operates today as the Lindsay Lodge & Restaurant.

Driving to Grants Pass and fire risk

Williams contains no major roads, but drivers can take Water Gap Road or Williams Highway to get to Grants Pass. Rogue Valley International Medford Airport is 33 miles away. The hospital at Asante Three Rivers Medical Center is 17.5 miles away.

Summers in Williams are mild and dry. “Over time, the weather patterns have changed, and flooding is rare these days,” Sepolpo says. “There are some places that have insurance for flooding. The challenge is during the summer: we’re getting smoke in July.” Smoke from regional forest fires can affect the air quality. The neighborhood fire department helps to manage the high fire risk. When it comes to crime, Williams’ CAP Index score is 1 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average of 4.
