The aesthetic of this small village differs from much of eastern and central Ohio, and that’s by design. Granville developers wanted to give the area more of a New England-style feel. The plan started with two roads intersecting at the town square, with churches perched on each corner. There’s been a concerted effort to retain Granville’s distinctive 19th- and 20th-century architecture, character and more rural feel.
Thickets of trees surround the 1800s and 1900s homes sitting near Granville’s downtown district. There’s a mix of four-bedroom Victorians and three-bedroom colonials within walking distance of the town square. Those houses are typically priced between $585,000 and $610,000. Considering Granville’s long history, homes have been built across the centuries. Branching out from the heart of the village, there are 1970s tri-level houses and custom builds developed in the early 2000s. Those homes sit on larger lots, anywhere from a half-acre to nearly 1.5 acres. Prices for these homes sit in the $500,000 to $700,000 range.
Residents can venture along North Prospect Street and Broadway in Granville’s town square. The sidewalk and tree-lined streets are a hub for mom-and-pop stores. Cedar and Thread is a catchall where shoppers can pick up anything from décor to sweaters and homemade snacks. Three Tigers Brewing Company is known for its live music and eclectic menu. Instead of the typical pub fare commonly associated with breweries, Three Tigers serves spring rolls, steamed dumplings and pho. Locally owned Ross’ Granville Market is where locals will find grocery staples. The closest big box grocer is the Giant Eagle Supermarket about 8 miles west in Heath.
Students are zoned for the Granville Exempted School District. The elementary, intermediate, middle and high schools carry the village’s name, and each earned an A rating from Niche. Granville Elementary students can take part in the school’s Ace Space podcast, which includes book reviews, interviews and school updates. Along with being highly rated by Niche, Granville Middle School was also named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education in 2023.
Locals and visitors alike stop along Bryn Du Drive to marvel at the alligator mound that is said to have been built by Ohio’s prehistoric people. From a bird’s eye view, the historical mound overlooking Raccoon Creek Valley has four feet and a tail, resembling an alligator – though archeologists believe it was actually intended to represent a panther or possum. At Raccoon Valley Park, locals can hop in the creek for a kayak ride or go fishing. Throughout the year, the bleachers at the baseball, softball and soccer fields fill up with neighbors watching the Granville Recreation District youth league games. Spring Valley Nature Preserve allows locals to explore wooded trails on foot, while Wildwood Park is a popular pick for bikers because it connects to the 14-mile-long TJ Evans Trail. It also features a community garden and a large wooden playground.
The century-old Bryn Du Mansion passed through the hands of many owners before being bought by the village in 2002. Since then, events, weddings and other celebrations have been held on the sprawling historical grounds. In March, locals can visit for three weeks for an art show, and on Sundays throughout the year, the lawn fills up with chairs for Concerts on the Green. Polo fans can also watch the matches held on Sundays from June through September at the mansion. In late September or early October, residents will want to prepare for more traffic during Big Red Weekend, when Denison University alums, parents and students fill up the campus for homecoming.
Due to Granville's rural nature, locals will have to depend on their cars to get around Granville and the surrounding area. Most urban amenities will be found in downtown Columbus, requiring a nearly 34-mile drive along state Route 161. Columbus International Airport is a bit closer, roughly 28 miles away.
