Spacious-home suburb resting beside a National Park

History, sweeping landscapes, grand homes and parks with Potomac River views are all part of what buyers seek in Great Falls. While natural beauty defines this town, it still possesses the benefits of living in a northern Virginia suburb, with its diverse restaurants within reach and access to greater points of interest through roads like Leesburg Pike. While it is known as a bedroom community, this is undoubtedly an area with its own character and identity, resting at the border between Virginia and Maryland.

Great Falls Park has magnificent views of the Potomac River

The area's namesake comes from Great Falls Park, dubbed for its view of the Potomac River's churning rapids and streaming waterfalls. The National Park Service oversees the park, and it hosts at least 15 miles of scenic or rustic trails across the park's 800 acres. Equestrians can saddle up for about 5 miles of horseback riding trails. A few miles away, Great Falls Park connects with Riverbend Park, where adults can hike, bike, kayak or canoe. Children's programs include geocaching, archery and fishing. Kids can even learn while digging in the dirt at the park's Forest Preschool. Located in the northwest part of Great Falls, the 500-plus-acre Seneca Regional Park lets visitors follow in George Washington's footsteps, with trails leading to the Patowmack Canal ruins, built in the late 1700s by Washington to navigate the mighty river.

Colonial estates rest on large lots in Great Falls

Laurie Mensing, a Realtor with Long & Foster and resident of northern Virginia for over 30 years, says, "Pricing is higher for homes here, but it has a lower density of housing as well." Expect to pay close to $1 million for a house here. The most extravagant of Great Falls' homes carries a price tag of nearly $5 million. A typical large Cape Cod-style house lists for about $3 million, while some midcentury and ranch-style houses from the late 1960s sell for a little over $1 million. Great Falls' architecture consists mainly of Federal-inspired colonials, surrounded by Virginia's native trees and ample lawn space between properties unique to the area's suburbs. Many subdivisions advertise resort-style living, with estate homes complemented by luxuries such as full-size swimming pools and private tennis courts. Homebuyers will find five-plus bedroom houses on lots ranging from half an acre to 5 or more acres. Great Falls is not a place to search for fixer-uppers or modest homes – most houses date to the mid-1990s or 2000s and have sprawling floor plans with the latest trends in appliances and fixtures.

Celebrate Great Falls Foundation hosts year-round events in town

Celebrate Great Falls Foundation, a nonprofit group, works to create a small-town feel for the community, hosting seasonal holiday events, fundraisers and concerts. The organization also welcomes new residents with goodie bags. Some of the Foundation's more significant events include Concerts on the Green, a free concert series from May to September, the 4th of July Parade and Hometown Celebration, and the Halloween Spooktacular, all centered around the Village Centre area.

Village Centre is the home of local restaurants and a Safeway for groceries

Residents won't have to leave the area to find a place to eat on a night out. The Village Centre shopping district is within Great Falls along Georgetown Pike and hosts grocery stores like Safeway and Starbucks. The shopping center also hosts local haunts like The Old Brogue, an Irish Pub with a modest outdoor patio that hosts open mic nights, live music performances and trivia events every week. With French flair and lush organic kitchen gardens, L'Auberge Chez Francois is a luxury dining spot that has served the Great Falls area for 70 years; just be sure to book a reservation before the spots fill up. The accompanying bistro, Jacques Brasserie, provides a more casual setting with the same Alsatian-influenced cuisine. Located closer to Leesburg Pike, Zamarod serves Afghan cuisine, including kabobs, challow rice dishes and cardamon ice cream. Mensing says, “Great Falls really has land and space with proximity to Tysons Corner.” Great Falls residents are also just a 9-mile drive from Tysons Corner Center, the largest mall in the D.C.-Baltimore area. At Tyson's, residents can catch a movie at AMC Tysons Corner 16, browse over 300 name-brand stores for clothes, jewelry and more or grab a bite to eat from a multitude of diners, from fast-casual grub in the food court to reservation-only white-tablecloth restaurants.
