Astor’s next-door neighbor along the East River
Though it may not be a registered historic district like Astor next door, Astor East River homes have stood the test of time. “These are character homes with a lot of charm, for people looking for hardwood floors, thicker baseboards and the like,” says Alex Young, a Realtor with Keller Williams Commercial who is passionate about his city and its neighborhoods. “It’s very easy to get around the community itself. Think classic, tree-lined streets!” Residents are within walking distance of Astor Park to the west and Optimist Park baseball diamonds to the east. They’re blocks from one of Green Bay’s biggest hospitals, and nearby major roads take them into the heart of the city.

Homes with deep-set lots under century-old trees
Like the rest of the Astor area, homes in Astor East River include historic Dutch Colonials, bungalows and American Foursquares constructed in the early 1900s. Cape Cods are also a common sight in the southern portion of the community, which was added following World War II. Clean sidewalks under century-old tree cover connect each home, while driveways extend far back into double-deep lots. “They tend to be narrow from left to right looking from the road, but 200 feet or even longer from front to back,” Young says. “The original goal was for homes to have a small farmable or livestock area in the back of the lot. They’re definitely not farming now, but residents still appreciate the space for their kids, dogs, and hobbies.” Available homes are snatched up quickly as homeowners take their chance to plant roots here. Prices range from about $130,000 to $270,000, depending on size and whether a home needs a few repairs before move-in.

Seasonal amenities at Astor Park
Astor Park serves both its namesake communities with a playground, green spaces and a pollinator garden filled with meadow blazing stars, bonesets and other flowering perennials. The park is in the overlap zone between Astor and Astor East River, according to Eric Drzewiecki, President of the Astor East River Neighborhood Association and Vice President of Astor’s respective group. He successfully campaigned for a grant from the Green Bay Park District to add seasonal improvements to the park. “We have ice rinks over the winter, and the shelter will now have heat so you can go a while and stay if you want,” Drzewiecki says. “It’s a perk that most areas in the city do not have.” Meanwhile, baseball diamonds and batting cages sit right along the banks of the East River at Optimist Park.

The neighborhood associations for Astor and Astor East River often work together to plan events for the adjacent communities. Neighbors trade trash for treasure at annual rummage sales, picnic at Astor Park and attend the annual meeting in the summertime to discuss neighborhood news and affairs. And of course, folks head to Lambeau Field on game day to watch the Green Bay Packers.
Getting around Green Bay from Astor East River
Astor East River is about 2 miles from downtown Green Bay, and less than 1 mile from HSHS St. Vincent Hospital. Busy traffic means that folks will need a car to get around to most areas outside their own walkable community. “It’s less from the hospital and more so from the fact that Webster Avenue and Mason Street are larger roads by nature,” Young says. “At the same time, it means they’re a shorter distance to what's happening downtown.” Lambeau Field is about 4 miles away, and Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport is 8 miles to the west on Wisconsin Route 172.
Dining downtown and shopping on Webster Avenue
CityDeck—Green Bay’s downtown waterfront hub—is a scenic option for dining and shopping. Astor East River residents don’t have to travel far for groceries, since Webster Avenue Market is just southwest of the community. It’s neighbored by local restaurants, like Lox Stock’n Bagel, which fills up fast for lunch and offers an extensive menu displayed across three walls. Right next door, folks can snag one of a few tables at counter-order Plia’s Kitchen. The restaurant serves up Southeast Asian cuisine from stuffed chicken wings, to pho, to Thai coffee. Select chain restaurant options line Mason Street beyond the East River, and because of their proximity to main roads, Astor East River residents can access these quickly.

The East River Flood Solutions Project
Flood risk is a facet of life in Astor East River. “The closer you get to East River, the more issues you get with flooding,” Drzewiecki says. “It’s more a problem on the East River side than it is for the Fox River because there is much less of a barrier there. The city is working on a resiliency campaign to decrease flood risk.” The first phase of this East River Flood Solutions Project is projected to finish in the latter half of 2024.
