One of Green Bay's historic districts a mile from downtown
In Astor, residents live surrounded by history while only minutes away from modern amenities. This neighborhood is a historic district designated on the National Register of Historic Places, and residents taking strolls through the area can stop to read plaques. Historic homes even have plaques that homeowners can purchase to showcase the year their home was built. Sitting at the heart of the neighborhood, the Union Congregational Church of Green Bay was founded in 1835 and is considered one of the oldest churches in Wisconsin, still hosting services today. Even though homes and buildings may be historic, residents have access to parks and the hospital just a couple of blocks from their homes and downtown is just a mile away for excellent shopping and dining.

Historic Queen Annes and Dutch Colonials marked with plaques
Astor’s streets are lined with mature trees planted along the sidewalks, with flower gardens adorning front yards and porches that are a staple of the neighborhood's homes. Styles include an eclectic mix of Queen Annes, Dutch Colonials and Tudor Revivals sitting beside American Foursquare duplexes and Craftsman Bungalows. “People here tend to interact with each other more because of the way the lots are,” says Alex Young, a Green Bay native and Realtor with Keller Williams Commercial. “The homes are closer to the sidewalks than some of the newer developments. Properties are a little bit more narrow but a little bit longer, so you’re closer to your neighbors.” Most homes in Astor sell between $200,000 and $375,000, but sometimes a larger historic home will sell between $650,000 and $725,000.

The restored Hazelwood House and St. James Park's walking paths
To learn more about Astor’s history, people can visit the Brown County Historical Society and Hazelwood Historic House and Museum. The house was built in 1837 by one of the original residents of Astor, restored and open for tours. All around the neighborhood, plaques sold by the historical society highlight Astor’s historic roots. When heading to the park, residents can make use of Astor’s sidewalks to reach the neighborhood’s green spaces and amenities. St. James Park features a playground for kids surrounded by sidewalks shaded by trees and flower gardens. The bandshell hosts community events, especially in the summer. On the eastern side, Astor Park offers basketball and tennis courts, but also seasonal activities, like an ice rink in the winter and a wading pool for kids in the summer. The Fox River runs along the neighborhood, with access to the Fox River State Recreational Trail, where people can walk, run, bike and skateboard.

Brunch and sports bars at CityDeck in downtown Green Bay
Residents head downtown for shopping and dining, but the neighborhood's proximity to it makes nights out accessible to Astor residents. CityDeck is a collection of restaurants along the Fox River downtown, including Hagemeister Park, a sports bar themed after the Green Bay Packers serving traditional American cuisine. Also at CityDeck, The Creamery is downtown’s brunch spot known for their eggs benedict flights where people can try different styles of this classic egg dish. Both restaurants highlight the area’s industrial past, with warehouse-like interiors with sleek modern amenities and exposed beams lit by Edison bulbs. For groceries, Pick ‘n Save is 3 miles away while a Walmart Supercenter is 4 miles away, both located along Main Street. Hy-Vee Grocery Store is also 4 miles from Astor.

Downtown Green Bay's two summer farmers markets
In the summer at St. James Park, residents gather for the Summer Music in the Park concert series every Wednesday evening. While the bandshell has benches built in, people also bring their own lawn chairs and get comfortable. Just a bit to the north, people can attend two local farmers markets on each side of the Fox River. “The one that’s on the east side of the river on Sunday mornings—that’s going to be more of your local producers and vendors,” Young says, referring to the one in downtown Green Bay. “That’s where you go if you want to buy things locally.” On the west side of the Fox, the Farmers’ Market on Broadway occurs every Wednesday evening in the summer, and features live music and food trucks, with Young highlighting how people will come just to meet up with friends at this one. During football season residents also go all out for Green Bay Packers games at Lambeau Field.
