Downtown living on Fox River's west side
A historic neighborhood once a strictly industrial military garrison of the same name, Fort Howard has since cultivated a lively urban residential pocket tucked between downtown Green Bay and its western suburbs. Comprised of historic homes, a robust shopping and dining scene and one of the city’s liveliest parks, residents here have the conveniences of a downtown community without leaving Fox River’s western side. “Downtown, on the eastern side, is mostly office buildings and corporate headquarters,” says Mike Beerntsen, owner of local candy shop Beernsten Candies. “There’s more character on our side.”

North Broadway's shops and restaurants
North Broadway is the main shopping and dining district of Fort Howard, providing plenty to choose from when it comes to a meal out. “On North Broadway, you can get a little bit of everything, from a smash burger and steak to sushi,” Beerntsen says. The once industrial storage and cannery facilities are now breweries like Titletown Brewing Company & Sky Lounge, where many go for a drink paired with views of the Fox River from its rooftop beer garden. Nearby is Kavarna Coffeehouse, a local spot appreciated for its vegetarian sandwiches and other menu items. According to Michael Sewell, a local Realtor with Core Realty Group, the coffee shop gives off a hipster vibe similar to those in New York City’s Greenwich Village. Several shops are within walking distance of one another, like Aurora’s Apothecary, Pete’s Garage bicycle shop and Beerntsen’s Candies, an old-school confectionary frequented by residents and tourists. For meals at home, groceries are picked up from Save A Lot, while big-name retailers sit in East Town, a shopping mall 5 miles east.
