Home to a bustling park and an active community

In 1919, the founders of The Joannes Brothers Company donated a 40-acre plot of land to the city of Green Bay, which was promptly named Joannes Park. Today, the park is one of the city’s most bustling green spaces, with visitors making trips to cool off at its aquatic center and catch Green Bay Blue Ribbon games, the city’s minor league baseball team. A local high school also sits within the northeast corner of the community, home to CityStadium, where the Green Bay Packers played in their early years. Considering its walkability, a recently reestablished neighborhood association hosts several events at the park and throughout the community. When entering the neighborhood, Joannes Park’s sign reads “One of Green Bay’s Original Neighborhoods,” a sentiment felt across the historical park and through the community’s transitioning residential landscape.

Joannes Park's walkable streets

Getting around Joannes Park is easy due to its grid-like residential streets. Sidewalks and bike lanes add to its pedestrian appeal. Late 19th-century and early 20th-century bungalow and Cape Cod-style homes atop quarter-acre lots showcase the neighborhood’s age. Prices range from $112,000 to $300,000, with many agents noting listed homes as investment opportunities. “Many of the homes have been or are in the process of being updated and renovated,” says Mark Cherney, Realtor and owner of Red Key Real Estate, who has 16 years of experience in Green Bay. NeighborWorks Green Bay has added a handful of newly built homes in the last few years. The local non-profit educates buyers on purchasing a home and uses grant money to help lower the overall cost.

Pool days at Joannes Aquatic Center and river views on the East River Trail

Joannes Park’s Aquatic Center is a stroll away for most in the community on hot summer days. It has become popular with locals city-wide, offering several pools with varying depths and giant waterslides. The greater Joannes Park also features a skate park, playground and baseball diamonds, where the Green Bay Blue Ribbons minor league team practices and plays. Those looking to enjoy walks and bike rides head directly east of the park to the paved East River Trail, which offers sweeping views of the river from a footbridge, situated a 2-minute walk from the park. Programming is also present here, including the Parkee Program, which has served the park each summer for over 100 years, providing little ones with free lunch and activities from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every weekday.

Joannes Park Neighborhood Association events

The community's namesake green space hosts many events, including the Annual Juneteenth Celebration. Put on by We All Rise: African American Resource Center, the most recent itinerary included a morning parade, community meal, Black Men Are Caregivers Tribute and a fireworks display to close the celebration. The neighborhood association brings residents together through organized events like park cleanups, community rummage and plant sales and is planning to introduce Joannes Jam in late September of 2024. Those in attendance will enjoy a night of free food and local music played on the front porches of homes around the neighborhood.

The convenience of I-43 and East Walnut Street

Downtown Green Bay, with its various eateries and CityDeck views of the Fox River, is a 2-mile drive east along East Walnut Street. Those traveling out of the city reach their flights at Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport, a 9-mile trip southwest on State Route 172. For road tripping out of the area, Interstate 43 is 3 miles northeast and offers access to neighboring towns and cities to the north and south. Meanwhile, HSHS Saint Vincent Hospital sits closer to a home off Webster Avenue, a mile southwest. Regarding public transportation, Webster Avenue and East Walnut Street are lined with Green Bay Metra bus stops, providing residents access to the rest of Green Bay.

Morning sips at The Attic Corner and afternoon drinks at Crown & Common

Crown & Common sits a block northwest of the neighborhood along Main Street. The open-air bar and grill is a casual afternoon hangout spot, offering over 100 cocktails, New York-style pizza and plenty of space on its covered patio. Four blocks west on Bodart Street are the shelves of used books, and local brews of The Attic Corner, where friends catch up over lattes and students spend time studying. Super Mercado El Local on East Mason Street is a Mexican grocery store within the community, while an Aldi sits along the same road, 3 miles southeast. Aldi shares the parking lot with East Town, a shopping mall home to retailers like Marshalls, Burlington and a handful of others.

Walking to Washington Middle School and East High School

Students attend Howe Elementary Community School and Washington Middle School, both of which maintain a C rating on Niche. Students walk to and from the latter, as well as East High School, as there are no bussing services for those living within 2 miles of the school. The B-minus-rated high school is home to City Stadium, its current athletic field where the Green Bay Packers once played some of their first games in 1921 before moving to Lambeau Field. “It's preserved with the metal gates and such to make it appear like it was back in the 1920s,” Cherney says. “It’s a landmark, and many people will walk by the stadium or at least make it a point to drive by.”

Potential flooding along East River

With East River hugging its eastern border, the community’s namesake park, as well as East River Trail and streets situated close to East Mason Street, are all susceptible to overnight flooding following abnormally heavy rains. This concern has been a topic of conversation for city officials in recent years. However, due to high repair costs and concerns about future problems, there have been no attempts to mitigate the issue. Though not a common occurrence, those looking to move into the area should consider this when buying a home in the neighborhood.
