The quiet and convenience of Preble
Despite living just 4 miles from the heart of Green Bay, residents of Preble describe their neighborhood as quiet. However, convenient transportation is the real cornerstone of the community. Flanked to the east by Interstate 43 and within walking distance of local schools, homes are well-positioned around the city’s amenities. “We have a diverse community and a low crime rate,” explains Pete Shedlosky, president of the Preble Park Neighborhood Association. “It’s so good that the mayor of Green Bay moved into our neighborhood a few years back.” Though sidewalks are limited, the association is working with the city to improve walkability, cultivating a community where convenience and comfortability are prioritized.

Lower speed limits, safer neighborhood strolls
No two homes are quite identical in Preble. Once vast farmland, the neighborhood was largely established in the late 1980s with diverse housing options. Quiet subdivisions offer everything from ranch-style homes to split levels and traditional architecture. A handful of custom builds flaunt everything from modern farmhouse façades to Tudor or Colonial Revival styles. These single-family homes are the most common, ranging in price from $150,000 to around $550,000. Properties provide spacious yards and paved driveways leading to multi-car garages. Condominiums are found in communities like Baird’s Crossing, where units range from $300,000 to $400,000. Some winding streets and cul-de-sacs are shaded by towering trees, while others are sparse. “We don’t always have sidewalks, either, which means people don’t get out as much as I’d like to see,” Shedlosky says. “But we don’t have too much traffic. The neighborhood association lowered the speed limit to 25, so people can safely walk around the block with their dogs.”

Walkable schools in the Green Bay Area District
Students are zoned for Green Bay Area Public Schools, where elementary students are divided between two zones. Those north attend Danz Elementary, which earns a C on Niche, while those farther south attend Martin Elementary, which earns a B-minus. Both schools are walkable from the surrounding subdivisions and feed into Edison Middle. With a C on Niche, Edison is situated next door to its namesake park and is similarly walkable. Preble High School is the largest in the district, providing various career prep pathways. Academic paths include culinary arts, engineering and nursing, while the Career and Technical Education program offers industry certification in specific disciplines. Altogether, the high school earns a B on Niche.

Preble’s shaded community parks
Well-maintained community parks are a staple in the neighborhood, where Preble Park itself provides ball fields and a basketball court off Hillside Lane. “I might be biased, but I think it’s one of the best parks in Green Bay because it’s shaded, and it has a nice shelter that’s actually heated in the colder months,” Shedlosky says. “There are also a few lengthy biking trails around here. Our local trails are Bear’s Creek and the Fox River Trail. I’ve heard the city is working on linking them, actually.” Edison Park neighbors the local middle school, where walking paths extend to pickleball courts and a playground. Just north, Bay Beach has been a popular Green Bay attraction since the late 1800s. There, guests can peruse the many rides, games and concessions of the amusement park or head over to the wildlife sanctuary. The 535-acre refuge is considered the largest park in the city, featuring animal exhibits, hiking trails and opportunities for cross-country skiing in the winter.

Connecting Finger Road to Mason Street
Mason Street stretches just south of Preble, the neighborhood’s closest thoroughfare for quick errands and dining options. “We’re hoping to add sidewalks along the main stretch of Finger Road to connect residents to the restaurants and shops,” Shedlosky says, referring to the residential street running parallel to Mason. East Town Shopping Center sits across the way, where casual fast food spots neighbor ALDI and retail outlets like Burlington, Marshalls and Kohl’s. To the west, Main Street is a bustling hub connecting neighborhoods along the east Fox River corridor. “Julie’s Café is over there. It’s a little mom-and-pop place with good food and really good prices,” Shedlosky continues. “Sunday brunch is probably their busiest time. Other places like that usually close by 2 p.m., but this one is open until 8 at night!” From Walmart Supercenter to Circle K and Pick n’ Save, the strip offers ample grocery options as well as fast food, pizza and pubs.

4 miles to the heart of Green Bay
Residents of Preble can reach Downtown Green Bay in just 4 miles on Main Street, where bus stops are provided by the Green Bay Metro. Though there aren’t many bike lanes in the area, these bus stops are relatively walkable, especially along Deckner Avenue and Bader Street. The closest emergency room is located at Aurora BayCare Medical Center, a 3-mile drive south on Interstate 43. Beyond local travel, residents are usually car or train-dependent. Those heading to Milwaukee rely on the Amtrak at Green Bay Transportation Center. The ride itself takes about 2 hours. Alternatively, drivers can expect a 112-mile trip on I-43. Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport is a 12-mile commute west on State Route 172, while Milwaukee General Mitchell International Airport is accessible via Amtrak.
From the football field to the farmer’s market
Packers fans rejoice that Lambeau Field is just 7 miles west across the Fox River. But outside of football season, there are plenty of events to find throughout Green Bay. The Farmer’s Market on Broadway is held each Wednesday from May through August. Vendors gather with fresh produce and artisan snacks less than 5 miles from Preble. Back home, the neighborhood association hosts a handful of annual events at its titular park. The spring easter egg hunt is followed by a picnic and ice cream social, while Halloween ushers in trunk-or-treating. “We have a lot of food trucks around here that we call in to set up at the park,” Shedlosky says. “It’s all free for the neighbors. Sometimes we even get the fire trucks, and the police department brings their canine unit for the kids.”
