Tank Park's historic homes and centralized location
Tank Park is one of Green Bay’s western suburbs, situated between Mason Street and Ashland Avenue, two major thoroughfares for the city. The proximity to these streets means residents are always close to whatever is happening in Green Bay, whether its Packers games at Lambeau Field or events in the popular Broadway District, both within 2 miles of the community. Further, Tank Park features classic and charming turn of the century history homes, with city refurbishing taking place to increase home ownership in communities like Tank Park. While homes have plenty of character and a historic feel, the lower prices than other historic districts, like Astor, mean Tank Park residents can enjoy a historic home for a more affordable option.
Turn of the century Nationals and bungalows in Tank Park
Tank Park’s homes are a mix of older Nationals and bungalows. “They are beautiful history homes from the turn of the century,” says Realtor Alex Young with Keller Williams Commercial. “So think late 1800s and early 1900s.” While the homes are mainly painted neutrals, the young trees add a pop of color as well as shade the sidewalks. Houses here typically sell between $150,000 and $250,000. While many of the larger homes once served as multi-family housing, Young says that this area of Green Bay and its housing has been undergoing a lot of changes. “You have that historic character and charm in the properties, so there have been a lot of focus to turn those homes into resident-owned properties over rentals,” Young says.
Tank Park students attend diverse Green Bay schools
Tank Elementary sits at the center of the neighborhood within walking distance of homes. It receives a C-plus ranking from Niche. Franklin Middle School is the second most diverse public middle school in Wisconsin according to Niche and receives a C ranking. At West High School, students can enroll in Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) or Concurrent Enrollment Program (CEP) courses. Niche grants it a B-minus and lists it as the third most diverse public high school in the state.
Catching the bus to Lambeau Field from Tank Park
While residents can walk to amenities like the park and school in the neighborhood, most will require a car when traveling beyond the community. Young says that the activity along Ashland Avenue and Mason Street makes it hard for residents to walk places. Downtown Green Bay is 2 miles away on the other side of the Fox River, accessible via Mason Street. “Green Bay has an agreement with the public transit authority and they put together bus lines that run to Lambeau,” Young says. During game season, residents can catch the QB Sneak bus route along Mason Street instead of driving to games. HSHS Saint Vincent Hospital is also on the other side of the river, just over 2 miles away. Ashland Avenue runs north to south, connecting to the grocery stores closest to Tank Park. When traveling outside of Green Bay, Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport is 7 miles on the southwestern side of the city.
Tank Park's athletic amenities and splash pad
The neighborhood shares its name with its community park—Tank Park. While it shares its grounds with Tank Elementary, Tank Park is open to the public as well, offering tennis and volleyball courts and a horseshoe pit. Trees line the walkways and green spaces, offering plenty of shade. In the summer, kids can cool off in the splash pad. Just beyond the Ashland Avenue overpass, the Fifth Street Community Garden offers a space for locals to grow their own produce in the beds available for rent. Managed by Brown County, the community garden has wheelbarrows, a water tank and other equipment available on the premises.
Breweries and coffee shops in the Broadway District
Because Tank Park itself is residential, locals can head to the Broadway District for a bite to eat. Kavarna strives to be a casual coffeeshop spot for locals, where people can socialize or work while sipping a coffee. It offers a seasonal menu with unique flavors like cookie butter or honey lavender. Housed in an old factory, Titletown Brewing Company has a taproom and a rooftop cocktail bar that looks out over the Fox River with live music on the roof on Sunday and Wednesday evenings. Titletown mainly serves appetizers, and their specialty is cheese curbs. For groceries, Mason Brothers Red Owl Store is less than a mile from Tank Park and is locally owned. At Bay Park Square, Green Bay’s shopping mall, Hy-Vee Grocery store is 3 miles away. Target is also 3.5 miles from Tank Park.
Football season and the Farmers' Market on Broadway
Tank Park is just over 2 miles away from Lambeau Field for easy access to the Green Bay Packers home games. With the Broadway District so close, Tank Park residents can head up Broadway for the annual and seasonal events. On Wednesday afternoons, the Farmers’ Market on Broadway offers over 100 vendors with produce and artisan goods along with live music and food trucks. Many Green Bay residents come here to explore the items but also to just socialize and catch up with friends, Young says. In October, Fall Fest on Broadway offers horse-drawn hay rides around Leicht Memorial Park, truck-or-treat for the kids, food trucks and fall-themed games.
Noise for Tank Park residents along Ashland and Mason
While this side of the river still has more industry and railways than the eastern side, Young says that residents are more likely to hear the street traffic from Mason and Ashland than any industrial activity.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
