Living along Green Bay's interstate loop

In the northeastern corner of Green Bay is the community of University Avenue-Newtols Street. This triangle of residential streets and parkland sits between two major thoroughfares in Green Bay—University Avenue and I-43. While University Avenue can bring residents immediately to downtown Green Bay, the access to the interstate means residents can get anywhere they need. The city’s major highways and interstates form a loop around the city, all connecting to each other, so even though University Avenue-Newtols Street residents might feel like they are distanced from everything, they can also get to the downtown Green Bay, Lambeau Field and eastern Green Bay’s grocery shopping in just a short drive.

University Avenue-Newtols Street's bungalows and ranches

Most of University Avenue-Newtols Street features bungalows and ranches sitting along tree-lined streets. Sidewalks connect the neighborhood, so folks living here may see neighbors out walking their dogs or taking a stroll when the weather’s nice. However, the neighborhood is also popular with renters, with apartments occupying half of the properties in this community. These low-rise buildings are mainly found on the eastern side, closer to I-43. Homes here typically sell between $100,000 and $250,000.

Skiing and hiking at Triangle Sports Area

While University Avenue-Newtols Street is predominately residential, it also sports plenty of green space. “People prefer to go to the parks when they’re out in the outskirts of Green Bay,” says Elizabeth Helfenberger, a local real estate agent with the firm Ben Bartolazzi. Danz Park shares its grounds with the elementary school and offers basketball courts and a playground. People can also come here to cross-country ski in the winter. In the eastern corner, Triangle Sports Area has disc golf and hiking in the warmer months. In the winter, the hilly terrain becomes a skiing and snowboarding destination for Green Bay. The Baird Creek Greenway runs through University Avenue-Newtols Street, where people can walk and bike through the woods along the creek.

Getting around Green Bay through the Loop

University Avenue links the neighborhood to downtown Green Bay, about 2.5 miles away. It’s also lined with buses, for those looking for a transportation alternative to driving. This thoroughfare also intersects with other major throughways closer to downtown Green Bay, like Main Street and Webster Avenue. HSHS St. Vincent Hospital is 3 miles away, accessible along Webster. With I-43 along the eastern side of the neighborhood, residents can go south to East Town’s grocery stores and shopping centers or head west and connect to I-41. This system of interconnected highways is called the Loop by Green Bay locals, referring to how it encircles the city. From here, residents can access Lambeau Field on game day, about 6 miles away, or Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport, 15.5 miles away.

Downtown's pubs and brunch spots at CityDeck

With the community’s location along the Loop, residents can go downtown for a night out. “When you’re downtown, you get more of the good restaurants,” Helfenberger says. “It’s kind of an escape from the country living over there.” CityDeck is a stretch of restaurants and shops along the Fox River, which includes The Creamery, downtown’s brunch destination. Hagemeister Park serves standard pub food and offers live music every evening Wednesday through Sunday. University Avenue-Newtols Street has two grocery stores within its community—Festival Foods and University Avenue Market. If residents need more options, East Town is about 2.5 south, offering Aldi and Walmart.

Football season all across Green Bay

On the other side of the Fox River, the Farmers’ Market on Broadway draws people from all over Green Bay for over 100 local vendors and live music on Wednesday evenings in the warmer months. In the fall, Green Bay celebrates their city’s team with tailgates and parties throughout neighborhoods. “It’s a bit like a college town when it comes to the Packers,” Helfenberger says, describing the intensity of football season. “Everybody’s wearing green and gold at church on Sunday.”
