Spacious homes adjacent to outdoor recreation in Westside
In Westside, broad streets lead past large late-century homes and to an assortment of ways to experience the outdoors. This area, on Green Bay’s western outskirts, offers a taste of tranquil suburbia that places residents within a couple miles of parks, golf courses and a botanical garden. Multiple big-box stores and restaurants are also close by. “You have a blend of starter-ish homes, where you have some young families in there, and some people who have been there for a long time,” says Lisa Jossart, vice president of economic development at the Greater Green Bay Chamber. “We have lots of parks, beautiful city parks, all shapes and sizes. Westside is a great example of that.”
Established, but modern homes in the area
Most houses on this side of the city were built between 1970 and 2000, giving buyers a mix of colonials and ranch-style options. “I think there’s huge pride of ownership in those homes,” Jossart says. “The homes are really unique.” Properties average over 2,100 square feet, surpassing the national average, and it’s common to find houses well over that mark. They come with a fair amount of yard room, on lots that often stretch at least one-fifth of an acre. Tall trees border many of Westside’s residential blocks, and some streets include sidewalks. Houses under 2,000 square feet often sell for $200,000 to $350,000, while larger ones range from $350,000 to $800,000.
Local schools are loaded with activities
The Green Bay Area Public Schools District has a B rating from Niche. Westside is zoned for three elementary schools, all offering extracurricular activities like basketball teams and music programs. One possible pathway for students is the B-plus-rated MacArthur Elementary School, followed by B-minus-rated Lombardi Middle, which has STEM and art clubs. The B-rated Southwest High features esports and robotics groups. Northeast Wisconsin Technical College is a higher education option in Westside with a B-plus grade and has about 200 programs.
Outdoor enthusiasts have options on this side of the city
Some who live in Westside are within walking distance of spots like the 64-acre Pamperin Park, with a disc golf course and a large playground. “It is a humongous, beautiful park, with trails,” Jossart says. “There’s a creek through there. You can rent facilities for parties, weddings, what have you.” Ted Fritsch Park has a ball diamond and basketball and tennis courts. Brown County Dog Park offers 4 acres of fenced space for pets, adjacent to the Brown County Golf Course, an 18-hole circuit open to the public. The Oneida Golf and Country Club has a private course. Green Bay Botanical Garden stretches 47 acres within the neighborhood, with over 120,000 vegetation types. Jossart says the garden is always busy. “Our botanical gardens are impressive,” Jossart says. “I think people don’t expect to see something like that in a community of this size.”
Nearby corridor is a destination for shopping and dining
Westside’s homes are a short drive from a corridor off Wisconsin Highway 54 lined with various businesses. The stretch has a Walmart Supercenter, Sam’s Club and Festival Foods. Also, chain restaurants from Chili’s to Hardee’s. Locally owned options include TNT’s Sports Bar & Grill, whose burgers are popular. The Farmacy focuses on health foods, with various salad bowls available. “They use a lot of local ingredients in their food,” Jossart says. Los Banditos is an award-winning draw for Mexican food. “It’s very, very good and very popular,” Jossart says.
Airport is a relative stone’s throw away
The Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport is about 4 miles south of the Westside area. The airport offers nonstop service to places including Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis and Orlando. The HSHS St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center, which has an emergency department, is 2 miles away. Part of Interstate 41 runs through the neighborhood, connecting to cities like Appleton, a 30-mile trip. The area also has multiple stops on the Green Bay Metro bus system.
Botanical Garden is a gathering place
The Green Bay Botanical Garden hosts several events each year. The Employment Resource Group Grand Concert Series offers performances on Fridays from July to September, while the Sanimax Concert Series features shows on Thursdays from June to August. There’s a free Fall Festival in late September with garden displays, face painting and food. Westside is about 3 miles from the Green Bay Packers’ Lambeau Field, attracting roughly 80,000 fans on game days throughout the fall season.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
