Life 'centered around the Desert Hills Golf Club'
Set 31 miles south of Tucson, Green Valley Desert Hills is a 55-plus community offering late 20th-century homes with views of the Santa Rita Mountains, recreation and easy access to shopping and dining within the larger, unincorporated Green Valley. “Green Valley Desert Hills is a pretty eclectic neighborhood as far as size, pricing and style of homes,” says Trina Alberta Oesterle, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty, who has over 14 years of experience. “It’s all centered around the Desert Hills Golf Club, so that’s part of the appeal.” A golf membership isn’t required to live here, but most residents are members of Green Valley Recreation, a non-profit that operates over a dozen recreation centers and plans social events in Green Valley. The overall CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. “There’s such a variety of home prices and styles, so it appeals to a lot of different buyers,” Oesterle says.
Broad desert panoramas remind residents that Green Valley Desert Hills sits on a high bench above the Santa Cruz Valley, offering sweeping views in every direction.
Green Valley Desert Hills unfolds as a tidy grid of single-level neighborhoods bordered by desert washes and mountain views, creating a quiet, golf-cart-friendly enclave on Green Valley's northern edge.

Golf, gardens and GVR in the neighborhood
Golfers looking for an exclusive experience can join the neighborhood’s private Desert Hills Golf Club, which offers a well-maintained 18-hole course, pro shop and occasional social events. “It’s really beautiful and supposed to be excellent golf,” Oesterle says. “There’s also a clubhouse where they’ll serve cocktails and light food.” Nearby, the 1-acre Arid Garden is lush with desert flowers and succulents; visitors can walk along the garden’s paved paths or get involved with the Green Valley Gardeners to help maintain the grounds. For GVR members, the Desert Hills Center offers a fitness center, tennis courts and a martial arts room. There’s also a community pool that’s especially popular in the summer when temperatures soar past 100 degrees. A handful of classes and clubs are held here too, like weight training, poker and ceramics. Nearby, Del Sol Clubhouse is a social spot offering parlor games like billiards, darts and foosball.
The Arid Garden showcases a vibrant collection of drought-tolerant plants and desert landscaping, offering visitors a peaceful retreat surrounded by colorful cacti and native trees.
Green Valley Desert Hills residents have access to the Desert Hills Center, which has tennis courts and a swimming pool.

Groceries and locally owned dining nearby
Three miles away, residents may head to the Continental Shopping Plaza for groceries from Safeway or a bite to eat. Folks might start their morning with a coffee from Starbucks or at Mama's Kitchen with a homestyle Belgian waffle topped with whipped cream and hot cinnamon apples. Nearby, Los Agaves is the spot for authentic Mexican cuisine, a cold beer at the bar or karaoke on Fridays. Green Valley Village is a mile farther up South La Canada Drive, offering additional shopping and dining options. “It’s a huge mall,” Oesterle says. “There’s this amazing deli — Madera Sunrise. They have the best breakfast and sandwiches.” On Wednesdays, the Green Valley Village Farmers & Artisans Market is held here, where folks can find locally sourced produce and handmade crafts.
Mama's Kitchen is a popular local spot in Green Valley, serving heart breakfast and lunch dishes in a cozy, casual atmosphere filled with friendly conversation and hometown charm.
The Safeway in nearby Green Valley provides convenient grocery shopping for local residents.

Wide range of late 20th-century homes
All homes here were built in the late 20th century and set in planned subdivisions, some lined with sidewalks and some without. “Each of the little subdivisions has their own HOA,” Oesterle says. Monthly dues typically range from about $20 to $60 and go toward community upkeep.
The neighborhood’s single-family homes are typically ranch-style or Pueblo-inspired with two to three bedrooms, detached garages and covered patios. Layouts range from 1,400 to 2,500 square feet, while lots range from 6,000 to 10,000 square feet; gravel-packed yards are landscaped with cacti and the occasional palm tree. One- to three-bedroom townhomes are generally smaller with 600- to 1,500-square-foot layouts, lots ranging from 1,000 to 7,000 square feet and detached carports or garages. Many homes have updated kitchens, flooring or additions like private pools.
Prices for single-family homes range from about $275,000 to $550,000, while townhomes range from $150,000 to $375,000 — both ranges depending on a home’s size and features. “You can find a $200,000 townhome with a carport up to a $500,000, 2,500-square-foot home with views and a big wraparound patio — it’s got a lot of differentiation,” Oesterle says.
Low-slung adobe-hued ranch homes, fronted by crushed-rock driveways and native planting beds, show Green Valley Desert Hills neighborhood's blend of Southwestern design and easy-care living.
Many Green Valley Desert Hills residences display contemporary pueblo influences-stucco exteriors, soft earth-tone palettes, and wide driveways sized for RV or golf-cart parking.

Neighbors drive to get around Green Valley
Interstate 19 borders Green Valley Desert Hills, offering a direct route north to Tucson, 31 miles away. Residential streets generally lack sidewalks, bike lanes and public transportation, so locals drive to get around. Northwest Medical Center Sahuarita is 10 miles away, and Tucson International Airport is 26 miles away.
Parties, classes and clubs for GVR members
The Desert Hills Golf Club hosts occasional events for its members throughout the year. “A lot of members do celebrations and memorials in the clubhouse,” Oesterle says. “They also have annual club championships with light food fare.” GVR also plans events for its members, including monthly dance parties, trivia nights and holiday mixers. “There’s entertainment, crafts, art shows and a book of classes that rivals a community college,” Oesterle says. “Hiking, artisan clubs, tango dancing, yoga — it’s just endless. There’s nothing you can’t think of,” Oesterle says.
