At the eastern edge of suburbia and rural Indiana
About 25 miles east of Indianapolis, Greenfield's steadily growing community serves as the county seat of primarily rural but increasingly suburban Hancock County.
Transportation has always been an essential part of Greenfield’s growth and identity. The nation’s first cross-country highway, The National Road, brought wagon trains through Greenfield after its completion in 1835. Today, much of the city sits between U.S. Route 40 and Interstate 70, which connect it to Indianapolis and 50 miles east to Ohio.
Though Greenfield is close to Indy, a lack of sprawl connecting the two cities allows the smaller town to maintain its own identity. “We’re clearly a suburb although there are miles of undeveloped cornfields between here and Indy,” says Roy Wilson, a broker with F.C. Tucker Company and lifelong Greenfield resident.

Homes range from 19th-century styles to New Traditional subdivisions
Houses near downtown Greenfield date back to the mid- to late-19th century, and mid-20th century ranch-style homes become more predominant in the blocks farther out from downtown. Subdivisions of New Traditional houses built in the 2000s are more common on the city’s edges. Greenfield’s population grew from 14,600 in 2000 to around 25,000 residents today.
The median sale price of around $280,000 is about $40,000 higher than in Indianapolis, but houses range from fixer-uppers under $50,000 to large estates just outside of city limits that sell between $500,000 and $2.2 million.

Greenfield-Central Community Schools offer unique opportunities
Greenfield-Central Community Schools earns a B-plus rating from Niche and ranks third of the four school districts in Hancock County. There are four elementary schools, two intermediate schools, a junior high school and a high school in Greenfield. Greenfield-Central High earns a B-rating. One of the school’s unique programs is a student-operated radio station, WRGF-FM. The school's marching band has won multiple Indiana State School Music Association Class B Marching Band championships. Greenfield's sister-city relationship with Kakuda, Japan allows a group of students to participate in a 10-day exchange program.
Greenfield Intermediate offers a nurturing environment designed to foster growth and development for students in grades 4 through 6.

Location on I-70 ideal for both commuters and commerce
Greenfield developed independently before it became a commuter destination, and several prominent local employers are located here. Amazon and Walmart have distribution centers with more than 1,000 employees near I-70 in unincorporated Greenfield. Indiana Automotive Fasteners and Avery Dennison also have large warehouses along I-70. Hancock Regional Hospital is Greenfield’s second-largest private employer behind Amazon. Hancock County Senior Services and Hancock Area Rural Transit offer transportation programs for county residents by reservation only. Greenfield has no fixed bus or train stops. Indianapolis International Airport, which is on Indy's west side, is about 35 miles from Greenfield.
Greenfield’s location is advantageous to Indianapolis commuters as well, and not just because the 24-mile drive to downtown takes about 30 minutes. The Earth’s rotation favors drivers to and from Greenfield during rush hour. “It’s east of Indianapolis,” Wilson says. “So, people who work there never have to drive into the sun.”
State Street features national chains and local favorites
North State Street is the primary north-south road, connecting the 3-mile gap between U.S. 40 and I-70 and the city’s primary commercial corridor. Chain stores and restaurants are more common near the interstate. A cluster of hotels also capitalizes on proximity to I-70.
Local shopping and dining are closer to downtown. Indianapolis-area chains Greek’s Pizzeria and Lincoln Square Pancake House are here. The Mug, a farm-to-table restaurant serving typical fast-food fare like burgers and hot dogs, and Carnegie’s A Place To Eat, a fine dining establishment in a former Carnegie library, are two unique dining options.
Greenfield also has a movie theatre, VIP Legacy 9, and a performing arts theatre, H.J. Ricks Centre for the Arts.
Qdoba is one of several national food chains in Greenfield.

Parks, golf courses and Pennsy Trail
Beckenholdt Park is a 75-acre rural expanse north of I-70 that includes walking trails along wetlands, prairie and woodlands. An amphitheater and a private dog park are also there. Riley Memorial Park is more of a typical downtown city park with a playground, swimming pool, splash pad, and athletic courts near the banks of Brandywine Creek.
Greenfield also caters to golf lovers with Arrowhead Golf Course to the north and Hawk’s Tail of Greenfield to the east, which are both public courses.
The Pennsy Trail runs 5.5 miles along the former path of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Local groups are attempting to close a 2.5-mile gap that would make the trail run uninterrupted from Greenfield to Indianapolis.

Riley Festival and Hancock County 4-H Fair are major annual events
Greenfield pays homage to its favorite son every October with The Riley Festival, a birthday celebration of poet James Whitcomb Riley – the creator of Little Orphan Annie and Raggedy Ann – who was born and raised in Greenfield in the mid-19th century. More than 450 exhibitors sell food, arts and crafts in the square around the county courthouse, which is themed after a different Riley poem each year.
The Hancock County 4-H Fair, held each June at the county fairgrounds north of Riley Park, is the largest annual event in the county, according to the Hancock County Tourism Commission. The fairgrounds also host a number of smaller events year-round.
Crime rates lower than national averages
Minor flooding is not unusual near the banks of Brandywine Creek, particularly in early spring after snow and ice melt upstream. But in the 21st century, only an April 2018 flood reached high enough levels to close some local roads temporarily. Most land near the creek is wooded, helping mitigate flood damage.
In 2023, the violent crime rate in Greenfield was about one-half the national average, and the property crime rate was just over one-third of the national average. The local violent crime rate increased compared to 2022, while property crime decreased.
