Longstanding community on the cusp of growth
The Asheboro Community is stepping into a new era. With more than 100 years of history in Greensboro, the neighborhood has seen sweeping revitalization efforts supported by the city. The projects have included home renovations, repaved sidewalks, pedestrian streetlights and refurbished parks. With a new page turned, the demand for the Asheboro Community is on the rise. “It’s a highly valued neighborhood on the cusp of growth,” says Hart Crane, a Senior Planner with the City of Greensboro who has worked in the neighborhood for more than a decade. “The investment into the area is evident as you walk along Martin Luther King Jr Drive. It’s a neighborhood with strong character, an active community association and the people there are some of the best you could meet. They take a lot of pride in the neighborhood.”

Accessible price points for 20th century homes
Homes in the Asheboro Community span a century. Lining the streets are American Foursquares, bungalows, Colonials and Queen Anne homes with large front porches. While some homes are in need of renovations, a good number of houses developed in the first half of the 20th century have seen complete remodels. “People are coming in and spending their money to make upgrades to the homes, which shows signs of a growing and healthy market,” Crane says. While homes with modern touches are more expensive, price points exceeding $200,000 are rare. They typically range from $80,000 to $190,000. The city has added brick extensions onto the sidewalks along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, while some paved pathways along the back roads are much more narrow and sometimes overgrown. Tree cover and shrubbery are common fixtures in the neighborhood’s small yards.
Asheboro Community even features some beautiful and colorful architectural styles.

Refurbished pocket parks
Revitalized parks are dotted around the Asheboro Community, including Douglas Park. “It’s not your typical pocket park that only has a playground,” Crane says. “It’s a hilly, forested area where people can roam along grassy areas or paved trails, and the city’s done some cleanup to the park, too.” The 8-acre green space also encompasses a basketball court. The playground at McCulloch Street Park is tucked between homes. Less than a mile south of the neighborhood, golfers can tee off at Gillespie Golf Course. The heavily wooded fairways of the public 18-hole course sit adjacent to Gillespie Elementary School. There’s also a driving range and a small grill serving casual fare like burgers and chicken tenders.
