Asheboro Community
Accessible price points for 20th century homes
Homes in the Asheboro Community span a century. Lining the streets are American Foursquares, bungalows, Colonials and Queen Anne homes with large front porches. While some homes are in need of renovations, a good number of houses developed in the first half of the 20th century have seen complete remodels. “People are coming in and spending their money to make upgrades to the homes, which shows signs of a growing and healthy market,” Crane says. While homes with modern touches are more expensive, price points exceeding $200,000 are rare. They typically range from $80,000 to $190,000. The city has added brick extensions onto the sidewalks along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, while some paved pathways along the back roads are much more narrow and sometimes overgrown. Tree cover and shrubbery are common fixtures in the neighborhood’s small yards.Buses and sidewalks link to downtown Greensboro
Public transportation is available to residents through the Greensboro Transit Authority, with stops along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Bennett Street. The former also serves as a link to downtown Greensboro, just over a mile north. Locals can walk or drive to the city center, which also features an Amtrak train station. With Interstate 40 sitting south of the Asheboro Community, people can make the nearly 17-mile drive to Piedmont Triad International Airport.Magnet programs at Guilford County Schools
Students in the Asheboro Community are zoned for Guilford County Schools and may attend Gillespie Park Elementary or Lindley Elementary. The former has a C rating from Niche, while the latter earns a B overall. Elementary school students can also apply to Brooks Global Studies School, which Niche rates an A-minus. The public magnet school will soon be moved to a new building, expected to be completed in 2025. Students later filter into B-rated Kiser Middle School and A-rated Grimsley High School.Renowned chicken & waffles joint and lively arcades
Asheboro Community is conveniently positioned between Gate City Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, which puts locals within walking distance of amenities and eateries. Nearby Dame’s is renowned for its chicken and waffles. The regional chain has a casual, relaxed vibe and fills up quickly for brunch. The bright, lively atmosphere at Boxcar & Arcade entices locals looking for a fun night out. The full-service bar is filled with arcade games and frequently hosts monthly pinball and skeeball tournaments, live musicians and other community gatherings. For groceries, locals will have to make the roughly 3-mile drive east to Food Lion.Refurbished pocket parks
Revitalized parks are dotted around the Asheboro Community, including Douglas Park. “It’s not your typical pocket park that only has a playground,” Crane says. “It’s a hilly, forested area where people can roam along grassy areas or paved trails, and the city’s done some cleanup to the park, too.” The 8-acre green space also encompasses a basketball court. The playground at McCulloch Street Park is tucked between homes. Less than a mile south of the neighborhood, golfers can tee off at Gillespie Golf Course. The heavily wooded fairways of the public 18-hole course sit adjacent to Gillespie Elementary School. There’s also a driving range and a small grill serving casual fare like burgers and chicken tenders.
