Greensboro neighborhood steeped in history
The neighborhood based around Benjamin Benson Street is in a part of Greensboro steeped in history. First, the street gets its name from a man who was declared free in 1820 and is believed to have been the first African-American to have gained freedom through the legal system. During the year, children can at times be spotted planting crops like cucumbers, tomatoes, butter beans and cilantro in the soil garden right outside the Windsor Recreation Center along East Gate City Boulevard. The facility is adorned with a mural of the famous photo of the Greensboro Four during their sit-in at Woolworth counter in 1960. Although they were all known at the time for being students at North Carolina A&T University, three of them had attended James B. Dudley High School, which serves the Benjamin Benson neighborhood. “It’s a community that does look out for each other,” says Erica Chadwick, the recreation center’s supervisor. “There’s a community group that meets every Saturday and they do different things within that community. They do different outings. They check on the seniors, they help provide for the seniors. They provide programs and special events for our youth. Like they do National Night Out.” Chadwick adds that this part of the city has drawn some college students due to its proximity to both Bennett College and North Carolina A&T. The community is also located near major roadways that help provide quick connections to both downtown and other parts of the Greensboro area.

A community meetup point at the Windsor Recreation Center
Located right along East Gate City, the Windsor Recreation Center provides a regular meetup point, as well as a number of activities for both children and adults. For nine weeks during the summer, the center hosts a nine-week summer camp where children can take part in a variety of activities that include sports and arts and crafts. Guest speakers, including local firefighters and police offers, also often show up. In addition to the outdoor garden, center users help keep an indoor tower garden used to grow herbs and seasonings like basil. Center users can also have fun during the warmer months in its outdoor pool or hone their basketball skills at the facility’s indoor and outdoor courts. The center will also undergo a rebuild soon, combining with the nearby Vance H. Chavis Branch library to form a two-story multiuse facility. Plans call for library space, an indoor track and pool, an indoor garden center and double gym courts.

Close to downtown and spots like Boxcar Bar + Arcade
Although there aren’t any major dining locations within the neighborhood, it’s not far from them. East Gate City provides a direct route to distinct dining and shopping district right along South Elm Street, where an eclectic mix of tenants occupy repurposed brick buildings. Among the favorites in this area about a mile drive west of the neighborhood is the Boxcar Bar + Arcade, where patrons can enjoy pizzas, specialty brews and a wide variety of games that range from foosball and pinball machines to traditional arcade video games. With the exception of Sunday, the establishment stays open until 1 a.m. Another nearby spot right on Martin Luther King Jr is Dame’s Chicken and Waffles. For bigger shopping and grocery needs, there are a couple of options. A Food Lion sits about 2 miles north of the neighborhood at the intersection of North English and East Market streets. Another Food Lion, as well as a Walmart Neighborhood Market, sit along Alamance Church Road about 2 miles south.

Affordable housing and a mix of older single-story homes
Although a mixture of generations live in the neighborhood, it does have a notable elderly population. Just a few streets north of the neighborhoods bounds is the former L. Richardson Memorial Hospital, which was the first facility of its kind to serve African-Americans. It now houses a 55-plus apartment community. Affordable housing also exists. The 236-unit Ray Warren community, which begins right at East Gate City Boulevard, is a complex of red brick buildings located along streets shaded by mature trees that include oaks. Other areas like Benbow Road are lined by decades old, single-story homes, many of which feature narrow walking paths and gravel and grass-covered driveways. The home styles in this area include Craftsman, bungalow, minimal Traditional, ranch-style houses and Cape Cods, some of which show custom features like steep gabled entrances and gambrel roofs. Price points can run between the upper $100,000s to the upper $200,000s, depending on factors like overall size and age.
