Growing suburb north of East Market Street
Roughly shaped like a triangle, Bessemer sits mostly between North O. Henry Boulevard, East Market Street and Wendover Avenue East. It’s a promising residential neighborhood just 2 miles from downtown Greensboro. Danielle White, broker with Heritage Realty, who has been selling homes for 28 years, acknowledges that home renovations funded by the City of Greensboro and East Greensboro Now, a development corporation, have encouraged community members to stick around and new buyers to move in. “There’s a lot of growth going on here that makes it an exciting place to be,” she says.

Smaller homes at lower-than-average price points
The community takes its name from its primary thoroughfare, East Bessemer Avenue. Usually, streets and driveways are on the narrower side, with some residents choosing to park on their lawns. Bungalows, Cape Cods and Minimal Traditional homes stand by the neighborhood’s sidewalk-free streets. The average square footage of a single-family home is around 1,200, well below the national average of roughly 1,900. Projects led by the City of Greensboro and East Greensboro Now have enabled major renovations to many of the neighborhood’s homes. Other initiatives include the Affordable Housing Program, a plan to give homebuyers quality options within their budget. Prices go from $40,000 to $250,000, depending on condition and year of construction. This is well below the Greensboro metro area’s average home value of $300,000. Bessemer's CAP Index crime score is 8 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4, with a 9 in violent crime.

Two Greensboro Transit Agency bus lines pass through the neighborhood. Route 1 follows East Market Street up to Guilford Technical Community College and down to the shopping centers at The Thicket, passing through downtown. Route 14 serves residents on the neighborhood's west side, leading to the downtown Greensboro station.

Barber Park and Gateway Gardens
The Greensboro Sportsplex is a 3-mile drive north and offers an indoor gym for basketball and volleyball. The facility offers youth sports programs and is also available for open play. Three miles to the south of Bessemer, Barber Park spans 55 acres and offers a splash pad, forested walking trails and playgrounds. The park is also the site of Penn Wright Baseball Stadium, where Greensboro’s Eastern Bronco League plays, and an amphitheater for concerts and special events. Gateway Gardens is just across the street. Run by a local nonprofit, the 11-acre green space is decorated with sculptures and topiaries. “It’s such a pretty place with so many events,” White says. “There have been drone shows that draw a lot of people, and the Police and Fire Departments’ popular Safety Town events teaches kids how to stay safe. But people also like it just to go on walks because it’s such a nice spot.”

A merry Christmas in downtown Greensboro
Bessemer is just east of downtown Greensboro, where many of the city’s largest events happen. When it's Christmas, residents gather at Center City Park to sing songs, meet Santa Claus, and admire a brilliant Christmas tree as part of the Festival of Lights. Ornate floats, Macy's-style balloons and marching bands file through the streets during the Holiday Parade in early December.
