This small, unincorporated community sits at the center of the Piedmont Triad, 15 miles away from High Point and Winston-Salem and about 20 miles from downtown Greensboro. With much of the neighborhood occupied by industrial parks and employment centers, residents of Colfax enjoy secluded, quiet streetscapes with access to nearby areas like Kernersville for shopping and recreation. “You’re a little further out, but you still have access to colleges in the area like High Point University and the airport,” says Bonnie Owens, local real estate agent at Mantle Realty and nearby resident of 12 years. Piedmont Triad International Airport sits just 10 miles east of Colfax, meaning some residents of Colfax will hear passing planes depending on their location.

Wide-set homes for every budget
Colfax features a wide range of available homes. “You can find investment properties and fixer-uppers, all the way up to million-dollar properties,” Owens says. Midcentury National and Farmhouse-style homes with covered front porches on large lots can sell for around $250,000, while newer constructions tend to sit closer together with fenced-in backyards with covered patios. Four-bedroom New Traditional-style homes featuring vertical siding, stone detailing and prominent two-car garages can sell for as little as $400,000. Some Colonial Revival-style homes from the 1990s and 2000s featuring brick exteriors and dormer windows on expansive lots can sell for over $500,000, while estate-style homes on multi-acre lots with large, manicured gardens and attached three-car garages can sell for as much as $1 million. Three-bedroom townhomes, built in the 2000s or 2020s on the neighborhood’s south side, also feature attached two-car garages and stone detailing on their exteriors and can sell for around $300,000.
Electives and extracurriculars at southwest Guilford schools
Local kids may attend Colfax Elementary School, rated A-minus by Niche, which offers an After-School Care Enrichment Services program, where students may stay after school to receive help on their homework and participate in other arts and crafts and reading exercises. Students at the B-rated Southwest Guilford Middle may join athletic programs like basketball and wrestling. The B-plus-rated Southwest Guilford High offers electives in business and marketing, computer science, Microsoft Excel and Adobe Visual Design. After-school clubs feature a range of topics, including ping pong, fishing, sports medicine and robotics.
Highway access to the greater Triad area
The Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation’s Route 17 bus can take residents of Colfax into downtown Winston-Salem, with stops along Route 421, while Route 20 can take residents further into Greensboro. I-40 can also take locals into Winston-Salem and Greensboro, 15 and 19 miles away respectively, while High Point is about 15 miles south. Nearby hospitals include Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center on the other side of Colfax’s western border.
Shop at Piedmont Triad Farmers Market for local produce
The Robert G. Shaw Piedmont Triad Farmers Market is a staple of the community, open daily until 6 p.m. for fresh local produce, sweets, and other local creations. Just next door to the market, Moose Café serves southern comfort food for breakfast and lunch, made from farm-fresh seasonal ingredients. A few miles west in Kernersville, OutWest Steakhouse serves steak and seafood with old-school western décor and is known for its excellent wine selection. For the most part, grocery stores are located outside of neighborhood boundaries, with a nearby Food Lion located about 5 miles away in Kernersville.
Disc golf and other athletic fields
The nearby Johnson Street Sports Complex features a regulation baseball/softball field that frequently hosts little league games, with a butterfly-themed playground nearby for kids to enjoy. For more extensive facilities, Triad Park offers many athletic fields, including sand volleyball courts and a disc golf course, plus three different brightly colored playgrounds and a rock-climbing area. The Caroline Field of Honor, housed within Triad Park, stands as a monument to the veterans of the Triad area.
Craft beer and live music at Gypsy Road Brewing Co.
Locals can head to the nearby Gypsy Road Brewing Co. for trivia nights on Tuesdays, Music Bingo on Thursdays, plus occasional live music and pop-up markets.
