Greenville's first suburb
Recognized as Greensboro’s first official suburb, Fisher Park stands as one of three historic districts in the city and is argued to be the most popular. What was once covered in marshy swamplands became an illustrious center of residential living with a namesake city park and distinguished early 20th-century housing. “I’ve lived in Fisher Park for most of my life,” says Hillary Meredith, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Yost and Little. “It has this unique historic overlay, where most homes were built over 100 years ago. While it has a lot of historical significance, it’s also an exciting and eclectic community.”
Grand 20th-century estates and quaint cottages
Circling the perimeter of the community’s central park are expansive estates showcasing styles of the early 1900s. Neoclassicals like the Hewitt House dot Fisher Park Circle and are known for their tall columns and grand foyers. Mixed in are stately 4,000-square-foot Georgians and Colonial Revivals with spacious front porches priced around the million-dollar mark. Along the sidewalk-lined streets branching away from the park are $500,000 Craftsman bungalows and Cape Cods with colorful flower beds and rich greenery blanketing small front lawns. Due to the demand among locals looking to move to Fisher Park, houses only last about a week when put on the market.
Magnet programs offered at Guilford County Schools
Students are zoned for Guilford County Schools and will attend Irving Park Elementary School, which gets a B from Niche. They’ll later filter into C-minus-rated Swann Middle School and A-rated Grimsley High School. Swann Middle School offers magnet programs in Spanish immersion and STEM, while Grimsley High School is known for its International Baccalaureate program.
Namesake park offers peaceful retreat
The neighborhood’s namesake park serves as the community's lifeline for outdoor recreation and events. Spanning 12 acres, the green space offers a peaceful retreat for a walk along heavily wooded trails. There’s also a playground for kids in Fisher Park. Bordering the neighborhood’s western edge is the larger 126-acre Latham Park, which earns daily visits from many residents. Locals go for walks, play tennis, take their kids to the playground and join neighbors to catch a youth recreational league baseball game. Skateboarders can test new tricks on the bowls, ramps and rails of the Latham Skatepark.
Bustling bars and locally sourced markets
Fisher Park has plenty of locally owned businesses supported by its residents, mainly along the neighborhood’s southern end. A short walk down North Elm Street leads to Fishers Grille. The restaurant and bar feature a long list of gourmet burgers and snackable bites. When the sun goes down, Fishers Grill lights up. It’s a hub for nightlife, open until midnight and offering daily drink specials. “Corner Slice is my personal favorite restaurant in all of Fisher Park,” Meredith says. The pizzeria sits next to Fishers Grill and is frequently full of familiar faces enjoying a slice and a cold draft beer. Locals can also walk to Deep Roots Market for fresh produce and other grocery staples. The locally owned market that sources food from the surrounding area also has a hot bar and salad bar. Next door is Joymongers Brewing Company, an open-air bar that’s become a popular spot for live music. Friends get together here for a drink on the outdoor patio that has views of the city skyline.
Curbside cocktails and lantern lightings keep community connected
The Fisher Park Neighborhood Association works to keep the community connected through events. A local favorite is the Annual Luminaria held in December at Fisher Park, when everyone comes together to light lantern kits at dusk. Christmas in the Park is another cherished community gathering celebrated by socializing around warm fires and enjoying sweet treats – with a surprise visit from Santa. Monthly curbside cocktails are popular among the over-21 crowd. Once a month, a Fisher Park resident invites neighbors to their driveway, where they serve craft cocktails and snacks.
Exploring Greensboro on foot
One of Fisher Park's biggest draws is its walkability to the surrounding city’s amenities. First National Bank Field, home of the Greensboro Grasshoppers minor league baseball team, sits on the other side of West Smith Street on the neighborhood’s south end. Walking less than a mile north along North Elm Street will lead to Cone Health Moses Cone Hospital. Locals can make the mile-long trek south to the heart of downtown Greensboro or hop in their car and travel the same distance along North Eugene Street. Accessing Piedmont Triad International Airport will require a nearly 11.5-mile drive northwest along Joseph M Bryan Boulevard. Several Greensboro Transit Authority bus stops are dotted along North Elm Street for public transit access.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
