Though residents enjoy a feeling of seclusion in Freeman Mill, they can access Greensboro employers and attractions by taking Hickory Creek Road to Route 85. Access to a vehicle is a must, as there aren’t any bus stops close to the community.

Down Freeman Mill’s woodsy thoroughfare, Hickory Creek Road, is a diverse housing stock, often hidden behind an abundance of dense trees. There are ranch-style homes from the 1970s with four bedrooms and price tags between $200,000 and $300,000 on one end of the spectrum. On the other end are larger homes that exceed 2,000 square feet on 20-acre properties that can price as high as $600,000. Housing in the area is limited. Therefore, when houses and plots of land are for sale, they can sell relatively quickly.

A place to learn
Students in Freeman Mill attend Guilford County Schools like Southern Elementary School, which has an overall Niche grade of A-minus and is ranked the top Niche standout elementary school in North Carolina. Next, kids attend Southern Guilford Middle School, which has an overall Niche grade of C-plus and a student-to-teacher ratio of 16 to 1. Teenagers attend Southern Guilford High School, which has an overall Niche grade of B-minus. The school is home to the Southern Guilford Academy, which allows students to explore specific academic and career interests. The academy has three strands: Agriscience, Health Sciences and Education & Leadership. While students engage in the academy, they still reap the benefits of a traditional high school.

Floating on the lake
Living in Freeman Mill puts residents in proximity to the 500-acre Southwest Park. Southwest Park is an outdoor playground with many amenities to explore. There are miles of hiking trails, a tucked-away dog park and multiple playgrounds within its expansive boundaries. With ample picnic shelters and pavilions, the park is a popular spot for birthday parties and other outdoor celebrations. The park additionally features access to the Randleman Regional Reservoirs at the Southwest Park Marina. With the heart of Randleman Lake just a few miles south, the branching creeks and reservoirs flow north around Southwest Park and Freeman Mill. The marina provides locals with a nearby boat launch to explore the 3,000 acres that the lake covers. While visitors can bring their own, the marina offers kayak and Jon boat rentals.

A berry fun activity
While boating the lake is one favorite activity for locals, another is berry picking at Bernie’s Berries. Bernie’s Berries at Kenan Farm is a locally owned, five-acre property open to the public. While most known for its bright red strawberries, the farm features a long list of produce items, including heads of cabbage, cucumbers, watermelons, and tomatoes. To avoid the process, visitors can call ahead and order produce to-go. Remaining groceries can be grabbed at the Food Lion just over five miles west in Jamestown.
