Secluded suburb near Guilford College
The quiet streets of Friendswood are approachable for newcomers to Greensboro. A small suburb just 7 miles west of the city center, Friendswood is starting to attract a younger crowd because of its location near Guilford College. “Students have started to move into the area because it’s convenient to campus, and you’ve got some professionals who work for the college living there, as well,” says Heather Neal, a broker with Keller Williams Realty who has 7 years of experience selling in the greater Greensboro area. With street names like Virgilwood, Underwood, Buddingwood and Ravenwood, it should come as no surprise that the neighborhood is densely forested, with mature trees shading the residential streets and lawns. While Friendswood has a sense of seclusion, the neighborhood is also conveniently positioned to access chain eateries, shopping and major highways.

Foliage surrounds 1960s ranch and split-level homes
Nearly every home in Friendswood was constructed in the 1960s, making it one of the more established neighborhoods in the area. Ranch and split-level homes dominate the housing stock, though some townhouses, priced around $125,000, have been developed on the neighborhood’s eastern end. Price points for the standalone homes start around $200,000, and Neal says, “Prices can climb to $300,000 if the homes have been updated. People are starting to come in and renovate kitchens and bathrooms, and they’re putting in new windows and some nice exterior touches, too.” Yards are about a half-acre in size, which is more extensive compared to quarter-acre plots in The Thicket neighborhood to the south. With larger yards, many add trimmed bushes and floral gardens. Towering trees fill the space between homes, giving owners an added sense of privacy.

Brand names and chain eateries along Wendover Avenue
Wendover Avenue serves as a lifeline for residents of Friendswood to run errands or enjoy a meal out. People can browse the aisles of Target, Kohl’s and Old Navy – all housed in the Wendover Place shopping center. For groceries, many locals choose to shop at Costco. “You’ve got all kinds of options in terms of chain restaurants like Panera Bread, Logan’s Roadhouse and Red Lobster,” Neal says. “There aren’t really many local restaurants along Wendover. You’ll find most of those closer to Guilford College along Dolley Madison Road.” Neal adds MJ’s Restaurant and Catering is popular among locals. The surf n’ turf spot is housed in a small Cape Cod, giving it an intimate feel. Nearby, Carolina’s Diner has an old-school atmosphere with neon signs and vinyl booths. It’s a go-to for breakfast platters piled high with eggs, bacon, hashbrowns and a biscuit.
