Pastures, trees and waterfront define Hackett Lake

Even though it's less than 5 miles from Downtown Greensboro, Hackett Lake is defined by forests and winding country roads. The community southeast of the Greensboro city limits surrounds a small, private lake, but homes rarely have views of the water. Instead, houses may face pine thickets and fields of cows. The semirural setting lends a peaceful and unhurried atmosphere to Hackett Lake. At the same time, the community's location between two interstates means it's not isolated from the rest of Greensboro.

Homes with lots ranging from 1 to 10 acres

Ranch-style homes are scattered across the landscape on large lots. Most lots span at least an acre, and some encompass 10-plus acres of land. These spacious properties give homeowners enough room for backyard pools, large sheds and, in some cases, cow pastures. “It’s good for folks who want to be close to the city and still have privacy,” says Phyllis Davis, who is owner of Phyllis Brown Realty and has experience selling homes in Hackett Lake. Houses don't often hit the market in Hackett Lake, and the neighborhood's only recent home sale fetched a price in the mid-$200,000s.

Getting outdoors at Barber Park and Gateway Gardens

Just north of the neighborhood, Barber Park encompasses an 18-hole disc golf course, a sprayground where kids play in the summer and an amphitheater used for concerts and festivals. Next to the park, basketball and volleyball games are often played at the George C. Simkins Jr. Indoor Sports Pavilion. Across the street, you don't have to pay admission to wander Gateway Gardens' 11 acres of trees, flowers and sculptures.

Residents don't need to use either interstate to get downtown. Instead, they can hop on the Alamance Church Road and drive to the city center.

Where you can shop, eat and drink nearby

Hackett Lake doesn't have restaurants or stores, besides a Dollar General on East Lee Street. However, there's a retail cluster 2 miles away at the intersection of Alamance Church Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. There, you can shop and eat at businesses such as:

  • Biscuitville, a Greensboro-based fast-food chain serving Southern breakfast food
  • Hibachi Express, a Japanese take-out spot
