Hewitt Area
Bungalows and Minimal Traditional homes from the early 1900s
The Hewitt Area is roughly shaped like a bowtie, and most residences are concentrated near the knot. Bungalows and Minimal Traditional houses line the neighborhood’s streets, though there are a few ranch-style builds and two-story Colonial Revivals. Most homes were completed between the 1900s and 1950s, though 21st-century constructions occasionally enter the market. Driveways can be short or long and paved or gravel, but most streets offer plenty of roadside parking. The median lot size is just under a quarter of an acre, and many parcels are decorated with shrubs and mature trees. Single-family homes sell from $90,000 to $300,000, depending on condition and interior space, though the market is usually quiet. Several large apartment complexes sit within the neighborhood, and nearly 90% of residents are renters. The Hewitt Area gets a CAP Index crime score of 7 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4, with contributing scores of 8 in motor vehicle theft and 9 in larceny.Nearby grade schools and two higher education institutions
Hunter Elementary School sits less than 2 miles from all Hewitt Area homes. The school receives a B-minus from Niche, while Jackson Middle is C-rated. Ben L. Smith High can be found 3 miles south, and it earns a C-plus. The high school offers Advanced Placement courses and an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, or IBDP. Through the IBDP, students can complete an original piece of research, engage in community service and earn college credit by scoring high enough on course examinations. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Guilford College, a private liberal arts institution, are both within 4 miles of the Hewitt Area.A cluster of shops and restaurants and Friendly Center
Kohl’s, Target, The Home Depot, CVS, several car dealerships and other stores sit on the west side of the neighborhood, just a few miles down West Wendover Avenue, along with fast-food joints such as McDonald’s and Cook Out. For groceries, residents can become members at warehouse club retailers such as Sam’s Club or Costco. Alternatively, a Food Lion is a mile up Spring Garden Street. Several local eateries line the Hewitt Area’s perimeter. Founded by Palestinian immigrants, Nazareth Bread Co. decks patrons’ plates with shawarma, falafel and staples of Middle Eastern comfort food. Chefs prepare filet mignon, scallops and other hibachi dishes before diners’ eyes at Arigato Japanese Steak & Seafood House. Kiosco Mexican Grill invites residents to enjoy burritos, fajitas, carne asada and other dishes al fresco on their spacious patio. Hops Burger Bar slings unique burgers from the Spicy Goat, topped with goat cheese, bacon and sweet and spicy pepper jelly, to weekly specials such as the Dorito-adorned Nacho Crunch Burger. Additional shops and eateries stand by the corner of West Market Street and Spring Garden Street and at Friendly Center, an outdoor mall with big-box stores and a movie theater 3 miles to the north. Four Seasons Town Centre is less than 3 miles south of the neighborhood and offers three stories of shopping, plus a bowling alley and a food court.Pocket parks, the Greensboro Arboretum and indoor entertainment
Pomona Park is a small green space on the north end of the neighborhood that offers a baseball diamond. Brevard Park is a few blocks over, featuring swings and a small playground for toddlers. South of the Hewitt Area, Hunter Hills Park sits between Gentry Street and South Buffalo Creek, home to a basketball court, a playground and picnic tables. Two miles up West Wendover Avenue, the Greensboro Arboretum features over a dozen themed plant collections, from a butterfly garden to a second-growth forest. “It’s a beautiful area to walk around and look at the flowers — a nice green space,” Gaddy says. Lindley Park is just next door, popular for its playground, basketball court and twin baseball diamonds. Starmount Forest Country Club’s 18-hole golf Arnold Palmer course has been played by professionals ranging from to Jack Nicklaus, and it continues to give both amateurs and experts a comfortably challenging game. The members-only country club also offers tennis courts, a pool with a 14-foot slide, a fitness center and daily exercise classes. The course regularly hosts the Carolinas Open and other amateur championships, which bring visitors from across the country to the area. AMF All Star Lanes invites residents to play a game of bowling or join bowling leagues. Breakout Games offers more than half a dozen themed escape rooms, where residents solve riddles and break codes in under an hour to beat various challenges. Plans are underway to turn the Hewitt Area’s Piedmont Indoor Tennis center into a pickleball facility, Pickles and Play Greensboro, by summer 2025. The venue will offer 17 courts along with leagues and lessons.A bus route, Wendover Avenue and the Greensboro Urban Loop
Residents are within 3 miles of ramps to Interstate 40, which runs 23 miles west to Winston-Salem. Additional highways within 5 miles of the neighborhood include interstates 73 and 840. Together with Interstate 85, these highways form the 40-mile Greensboro Urban Loop, which encircles the city. Greensboro Transit Agency bus route 1 passes through the heart of the Hewitt Area, running west to the shopping centers of West Wendover Avenue and east to downtown. Piedmont Triad International Airport sits 12 miles to the northwest. Cone Health’s Wesley Long Hospital is about 3 miles up West Wendover Avenue.Within a few miles of the Greensboro Coliseum Complex
The Greensboro Coliseum is only about 2 miles east of the neighborhood, a multiuse complex that hosts concerts, monster-truck shows and various special events. The facility is home to the Greensboro Swarm, the city’s G League basketball team, and the Carolina Cobras, a National Arena League football team.
