Prominent, prestigious Greensboro neighborhood with a country club
Stone fixtures at the intersection of North Elm Street and Sunset Drive, mark the entrance to Old Irving Park, an upscale Greensboro community. Robert Canner, owner of Robert Canner Real Estate and Greensboro resident for nearly 40 years, characterizes it as “the most prestigious neighborhood in Guilford County.” Initially developed in the early 1900s, this verdant suburb has been home to industrialists, philanthropists and several generations of Gate City’s most prominent citizens. As Canner puts it: “Tobacco and textiles built Greensboro. Old Irving Park was where the upper class lived.” Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway and long-time Gate City resident John Nosek notes that Greensboro's most expensive home sales are often in Old Irving Park, such as textile heir Benjamin Cone’s mansion, which went for $4.5 million in early 2024. “Even back in the 1980s, homes fetched over $1 million,” Canner adds. Despite its name, Old Irving Park is continuing to change with the times, although the neighborhood’s stature and elegance show no signs of disappearing.
Stately homes around the country club and smaller ranchers
“Some older homes are being knocked down for their land value and to be split into smaller lots,” Canner says. “The neighborhood has a premier location in the city, being only a few minutes north of downtown and so close to the country club,” Canner says, referring to the Greensboro Country Club, which sits at the center of the neighborhood. Unique to Old Irving Park, homes face the golf course, allowing homeowners to spectate from their front porch or lawn. Many of these manors follow stately Federal, Georgian, French Country Style and Italianate designs. Many front yards are decorated with professionally tended flower beds. Homes near the golf course go between $900,000 and $2 million, but prices can get up to $4.5 million.
The subdivision of Brown Town sits on the neighborhood’s north side, between West Cornwallis Drive and Buffalo Lake. “Brown Town comprises one-story ranch-style homes, usually with the horizontal windows characteristic of midcentury constructions,” Nosek says. “Its prices and location within Old Irving Park make it a good starter neighborhood.” Prices usually go for between $350,000 and $900,000. More ranch-style homes, Cape Cods, bungalows and occasional Colonial Revivals can be found on the south and west sides of the neighborhood. Prices are highly variable, going from $200,000 to $1.2 million, depending on size and condition. The average home is 2,700 square feet, substantially above the national average of 1,900. The median lot size is about a third of an acre. Condo units can be found on the east and west edges of the neighborhood, priced between $100,000 and $300,000.

Anchored by the Greensboro Country Club
Located in the heart of the neighborhood, the Greensboro Country Club is one of the neighborhood’s biggest attractions. The private, invite-only club offers an 18-hole, Donald Ross-designed golf course, six clay tennis courts, an aquatics center, a fitness center and numerous special event rooms. Additionally, members can visit The Farm, another facility owned by the club with 18 more holes of golf and other amenities. The Farm is located 9 miles northwest of the neighborhood in Laurel Park. Johnson Park is a small pocket park on the south side of the neighborhood between Nottingham and Hammel roads featuring two playgrounds, basketball courts and trikes, foot-powered cars and other toys left behind by neighbors for children to enjoy. Latham Park is just south of the neighborhood, within walking distance of many homes. The park features two baseball diamonds, eight tennis courts and a paved trail. There’s also the Latham Skatepark, which has a big bowl and various obstacles for skaters, rollerbladers and BMX bikers. The Sherwood Swim & Racquet Club sits on the northeast corner of the neighborhood, offering an Olympic-sized pool, clubhouse, three indoor tennis courts and eight outdoor ones. Members of all ages can participate in tennis clinics or private lessons. Many residents simply enjoy strolling around the neighborhood for leisure, and Old Irving Park even attracts outsiders looking for an evening walk.

Many children attend the acclaimed Greensboro Day School or public schools
Irving Park Elementary on the neighborhood's west side receives an overall B from Niche. Mendenhall Middle, just outside of Old Irving Park, is also B-rated. Page High scores a B-plus and offers 25 athletic teams, over 70 honors-level courses and over 20 active clubs from photography to robotics. Canner notes that Greensboro Day School is a popular private option among Old Irving Park residents. “The school has great athletic facilities and a culture of excellence. The school also provides students with great connections and networking opportunities, which will help them after graduation,” Canner says. Niche awards the institution an A-plus and ranks it as the best private kindergarten through 12th-grade school in the Greensboro area. Pre-kindergarten through eighth graders can attend A-plus-rated Saint Pius X Catholic School for a faith-based education.
Mendenhall Middle School serves students 6-8th grade.

Old Irving Park is closer to shopping plazas like Friendly Center
East side residents are close to Golden Gate Shopping Center, which offers a Food Lion, CVS and a few restaurants. Vito’s Italian Restaurant serves pasta, chicken parmesan, cheesecake and other Italian dishes in a casual atmosphere. Qinji Hawaiian BBQ & Ramen offers unique infused Hawaiian and Japanese cuisine. West side residents can stop by the shops and restaurants along Battleground Avenue, such as Target, Office Depot and Harris Teeter. Lucky 32 invites patrons to enjoy Southern fare and watch live paintings by the Quaintance-Weaver Restaurants and Hotels artist-in-residence. The farm-to-table restaurant also hosts live music every Wednesday night. Kickback Jack’s sports bar is known for their seafood, pub fare and abundance of televisions for cheering on sports teams. The Friendly Center, a large outdoor shopping mall, is 3 miles west of the neighborhood and features more restaurants and stores, plus a cinema.

Only a few miles north of Downtown Greensboro
West Wendover Avenue bounds the neighborhood to the south, running east to Burlington. Battleground Avenue is lined with shopping centers just west of Old Irving Park. Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital sits just southeast of the neighborhood. Downtown Greensboro is another 1.5 miles down the road. Piedmont Triad International Airport is 10 miles to the west. There are a few bus stops by Cone Hospital and along Battleground Avenue and Lawndale Drive, leading downtown. However, most residents prefer driving.
The Eastern Music Festival and NC Folk Festival
The Eastern Music Festival takes place on Guilford College’s campus. Each June and July, young musicians study and perform classical music under the guidance of the college’s faculty. In September, the North Carolina Folk Festival comes to Downtown Greensboro’s Tanger Center to give residents three days of international music.
