Westchester County community known for education and transportation

Greenville, commonly known as Edgemont, is a stretch of suburban landscape in Westchester County, 24 miles from New York City. “Schools are really good, and proximity to the city is nice,” says April Monaco, a real estate agent with Houlihan Lawrence who has worked in the industry for over 20 years. While the highly rated school district and access to public transportation are major selling points in Greenville, proximity to shopping on Central Park Avenue is another perk. The shopping hub features grocery stores, restaurants and retailers close to most residences. The Edgemont Community Council serves as a voice for the community and hosts holiday events and meetups. Greenville combines suburban tranquility and community with the ease of urban proximity.

Competitive housing market in Greenville

Homes are set on manicured properties along wide, winding roadways, and surrounded by maple and oak trees. Split-level, contemporary, Tudor-revival and Colonial-revival styles are common, and these homes range between $800,000 and $2.5 million. “There’s not much construction in the area,” says Giovanni Gonzalez, a Westchester County broker with GioHomes Real Estate Services. “We rarely have new builds. I don’t remember the last time I saw one. Buyers have to be aware that they have to be ready to compete because the inventory is very low.” Co-op units can sell between $140,000 to $400,000.

Edgemont School District gets an A-plus

Edgemont School District has an A-plus rating from Niche and is listed as one of the top 10 districts in Westchester County. While it does not offer open enrollment, it does allow some nonresident students to attend school in the area, provided they pay tuition. The district has two elementary schools for kindergarten through sixth grade and one high school for grades seven through 12. Students west of Central Park Avenue attend Greenville Elementary School, while those to the east attend Seely Place Elementary School. Both schools receive an A-plus, as does Edgemont Junior/Senior High School.

Edgemont School District borders Scarsdale Public Schools, which is also highly rated. Some Greenville homes may have a Scarsdale postal address but fall within the Edgemont School District. Gonzalez advises buyers to verify their new home's district with their listing agent or the municipality.

Commuters use Scarsdale Station

Greenville does not have its own train station. “Residents use the Scarsdale train station,” Gonzalez says. The Harlem line runs through the Scarsdale station, taking commuters on a 30-minute trip to Grand Central Terminal. Bee-Line bus stops along Ardsley Road and Central Park Avenue serve the Scarsdale train station and Westchester County. Sprain Brook and Bronx River parkways both lead about 21 miles south to Manhattan, and the drive time varies based on traffic. LaGuardia Airport is 20 miles south when using the Bronx River Parkway. White Plains Hospital is 5 miles north.
