The first town west of Shreveport

Located along Interstate 20 on the Texas-Louisiana border, rural Greenwood is proud of its history as the last outpost for mail to the American West; each September, Greenwood’s 3,200 residents celebrate this legacy at the Pioneer Heritage Festival. Today Greenwood is the first town outside of Shreveport, only 16 miles away. “Here you have easy access to the interstate and downtown,” says Tim Navarre, a real estate agent with CENTURY 21 Elite, “but you still have the country feel.”

A secluded rural oasis

In quiet Greenwood, “There’s not a whole bunch of traffic or streetlights,” Navarre says. “That’s part of the draw.” Most houses here are ranch-style or manufactured homes built after 1975, though there are also some older farmhouses; all sit on wide, deep lots peppered with mature pine trees. Prices typically range from $100,000 for a three-bedroom manufactured home on a secluded lot to $465,000 for a four-bed ranch-style house in a gated community, though the few luxury homes in the area can cost up to $950,000. Navarre says there’s a big market for land in Greenwood; people are buying vacant lots with plans to build new homes. Lots prices can range from $10,500 for less than an acre to $550,000 for over 50 acres.

Make the drive to Orlandeaux’s Café

Residents can find fast food options like Sonic and Wendy’s along I-20 in Greenwood, but locals may want to drive into Shreveport to enjoy sashimi and hibachi at cozy Kumo Sushi; savor something sweet at Tasty Creme Donuts; or dig into Creole cuisine like gumbo and po’boys at Orlandeaux’s Café, the oldest continuously operating African-American family-owned restaurant in the United States. For groceries, locals can head to the Dollar General in Greenwood or Brookshire’s in Shreveport.

Greenwood’s history glows

A September staple since 1979, the Pioneer Heritage Festival features a fishing tournament, live music, pageants and local vendors. Hot air balloons light up the night sky at Glow Greenwood, a hot air balloon festival where residents can ride in a balloon and enjoy live music. Throughout the year, locals can cheer on their favorite drivers at Boothill Speedway, a clay racetrack that hosts regular stock car races.

An I-20 outpost
