An island township on the Detroit River
The green spaces and riverfront setting of Gross Ile make the township a wellspring of outdoor activity, but its Victorian architecture, small-town farms and last remaining lighthouse give it a charm that beckons to young families. “A lot of younger people graduate, go off to college and live somewhere else for a while,” says Maria Starkey, licensed realtor with MBA Realty. “Then, when they want to start their family, they come back.”

Varying home styles and prices
“There’s a combination of homes, from waterfront estates to smaller homes that a younger couple could start out in,” Starkey says. “So we have a vast range of price points and sizes.” With condos added to the mix, prices can be as low as $125,000. The town’s Victorian-style farmhouses are picturesque against the backdrop of the Detroit River, but homes of Grosse Ile can be two-story Colonial revivals, wide windowed ranch homes, brick contemporaries or other styles. Single-family homes can sell as low as $200,000 for a three-bedroom ranch-style home to $1 million for a four-bedroom, waterfront Colonial revival.

Grosse Ile Township Schools
Grosse Ile has a dedicated school district and its schools have consistently ranked among the best in the state. Parke Lane Elementary School serves pre-kindergarten through 5th grade students, earns an A on Niche and offers before and after-school programs with yoga and STEM activities. Grosse Ile Middle School provides grades 6 through 8 and earns an A-minus. Grosse Ile High School earns an A and offers sports programs like equestrian team and figure skating.

Community events on the island
“Islandfest is a big event, and that’s coming up here in June,” Starkey says. “That’s been around for decades. They bring in carnival-type rides, all kinds of vendors selling their crafts, live music, and a lot of food trucks.” The end of the festival is capped off with a fireworks show, Starkey says, and local yacht clubs often host their own events throughout the year and mark the occasion with fireworks.
Not a lot of amenities, but plenty of green space
“We’re not really known for great parks,” Starkey says. “And one of the parks we do have needs work, so they’re not letting people use it right now.” But the town does have ample green space, and those areas are protected from further development. The trails of Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge offer serene hiking around the edges of Quarry Lake, and the refuge is the only international wildlife refuge in North America. In addition to public green spaces, the island is home to world-class golf courses like Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club and West Shore Golf & Country Club.

Smalltown shopping and dining
The township’s commercial corridor rests along Macomb Street, nearly in the middle of the township’s largest island. National brands like CVS and Kroger keep Grosse Ile homes stocked with essentials and groceries, and locally-owned spots like Island Goods and the Bicycle Museum offer unique gifts and experiences. For a great dinner, Starkey says there are a couple of options. “Perdino’s on Macomb is a great place to get steaks or seafood,” she says. “But Loyd’s is good for wood-fired pizzas or more casual fare.”

Transportation relies on bridges
Grosse Ile is connected to the continental U.S. by two bridges: the Grosse Ile Parkway bridge on the island's southeast side and the Bridge Road bridge on the northeast side. “Over the years, the county bridge will need repairs,” Starkey says. “So it’ll be closed for some periods of time.” The township has no public transportation available, but the bridges put drivers less than four miles from Trenton and seven miles from Interstate 75.
