Affectionately known as Hamburger Hill, the Long Hill neighborhood has many burger places.
A neighborhood for hamburger lovers and homebuyers
It’s been known by many names, including Hamburger Hill and the Golden Strip. While Long Hill, a neighborhood in western Groton, may offer a range of homes, recreation and good schools, one thing is certain — it’s full of fast-food restaurants and strip malls. “Three developers built shopping centers in Long Hill after the family-owned businesses downtown were forced out by Electric Boat, the submarine maker,” says broker-agent Lian Obrey with Re/Max Legends, who came to Groton right after marrying her high school sweetheart, a sailor, in 1963. “You can find almost anything you are looking for in Long Hill,” she says, “even the right home.” With Electric Boat hiring thousands of new workers for its manufacturing facility along the Thames River, people skilled in welding, plumbing and other trades are moving into the area. “Electric Boat is probably Groton’s biggest employer,” says Realtor/investor Jason Pollard with Compass. “In Long Hill, blue-collar workers have housing options.” With quick access to Interstate 95 and public transportation, Long Hill is a neighborhood for hamburger lovers and Groton’s growing workforce.
The Long Hill neighborhood of Groton is known for a plethora of shopping options along Route 1.
Places to shop, eat and restore on Route 1
Drivers will spot restaurant after restaurant along Route 1, the main commercial corridor, from fast-food places like McDonald’s to local eateries like Chester’s Barbecue, which slow-cooks its meat behind the restaurant. In Long Hill, a Japanese steak house is next to the pawn shop; the Goodwill is in the same shopping center as T.J. Maxx; and auto parts stores face each other across the street. An upscale gem like Olio, a restaurant and bar near the intersection of Route 1 and I-95, offers new takes on Italian favorites. The Village Bake House, located toward the neighborhood's center, is a casual place to enjoy handcrafted salads, wraps, sandwiches and its signature potato salad. Banks, barbershops and toy stores mingle in this Long Hill shopping district. For groceries, residents can choose from Big Y Class Market, Aldi, The Discount Food Box and some international specialty markets. Fitness fanatics can also get their workouts in close to home at Renegade Fitness or Planet Fitness, both on the strip.

Range of housing options in Long Hill
The real estate market in Groton is highly diverse. “You can look at a $3 million house and a few miles away see a $300,000 house,” Pollard says. This principle holds for Long Hill, where homes can range from $50,000 to $550,000 in less than a mile. Behind the shopping centers, developments include mobile home parks with two-bedroom units that sell for between $50,000 and $165,000. Two- and three-bedroom condominiums, some with private patios and single-car garages, are priced from $160,000 to $285,000. Subdivisions in the neighborhood feature a mix of styles, from split levels and raised ranch-styles to colonial revival homes and historic farmhouses. These single-family homes list from $200,000 to $550,000. “The city is planning to build new rental units to handle the influx of workers into the area,” Obrey says. “The hope is that some of our retired residents will move into them, which will eventually open up more homes in the market.”
