A historic and semi-rural community minutes from Downtown Mystic
Long before the drawbridge was built in Downtown Mystic, Old Mystic was a carriage stop to the north where travelers could cross the Mystic River where it is just a stream. Wood-framed homes, a church and businesses were soon built in this 18th-century village. “It’s the oldest in Mystic,” says Greg Broadbent, an associate broker with Re/Max Coast and Country, who built his family home on 4 acres of land west of the village in what is now Groton. Since its founding, Old Mystic has grown to encompass over 5 square miles. “Old Mystic's Town Center is a tiny version of Downtown Mystic,” he says. “The rest of the neighborhood is newer homes on larger lots. People move up here for the land and to be close to downtown.”
With several newer developments built among farmland and nature preserves in Old Mystic, the city has come to offer a taste of country living without the remoteness of rural life. “The closer you are to the coastline, the more you’ll pay,” says Ann Bergendahl, broker-owner of Willow Properties and a 17-year veteran of Mystic real estate. “The more north you go, the more acreage you’ll get for your buck. In Old Mystic, you’re still only 20 minutes from the beach.”
From historic homes to classic suburban houses, Old Mystic offers homebuyers more space, less congestion and a stunning wooded landscape of rolling hills and stone walls to call home.

and chairs. “It’s a fantastic family-run business and is very popular,” Broadbent says. South of the town center along Interstate 95, Olde Mistick Village is a shopping center modeled after a colonial village. The property offers a meeting house for events and dozens of stores and restaurants, such as Sticky Situations, a family-owned shop specializing in honey across the U.S., from California orange blossom to Connecticut peppermint. Rio Salado, an upscale eatery across the street, serves modern Mexican cuisine in its bright, spacious interior or on the outdoor private patio. Visitors are also drawn to the Mystic Aquarium next door. With shark touch tanks, beluga whales, and sea lions serving as honored birthday party guests, the Mystic Aquarium is a popular place for families. McQuade’s Marketplace is the nearest grocery store south of the aquarium, and in the western part of the neighborhood, Whittle’s Willow Spring Farm Market is famous for its corn, apple-picking and pumpkins.

mile walking trail and river views. The sanctuary is accessible off River Road, which runs along the Mystic River and travels north to the Old Mystic Town Center. “River Road from start to finish is a favorite of walkers and joggers,” Broadbent says. “If you like running, a large part of it is waterfront and a great run.” The neighborhood also offers swings, jungle gyms and a half basketball court at Northeast Academy. Old Mystic Playground near the town center features similar equipment, including slides and rocking horses. The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center, a wildlife sanctuary with over 8 miles of hiking trails and a natural history museum, is south of Olde Mistick Village and the Mystic Aquarium. It also operates Coogan Farm Nature and Heritage Center, the 1654 homestead of Captain John Gallup Jr., which features heirloom apple and pear trees in its orchard. Mystic Indoor Sports, west of the town center, offers adult and youth sports, including tennis, pickleball, lacrosse, and field hockey. The nearby 18-hole Millwood Creek Disc Golf Course is heavily wooded with rocks, trees, elevation changes and highly visible tee pads and baskets.

It features garlic-inspired dishes prepared by restaurants in the shopping center, a farmers market full of local vendors, live music, activities for kids and other intriguing programs, like a martial arts demonstration. The shopping center also hosts a Halloween event when children in costumes are welcome to visit stores for candy. “Olde Mistick Village is packed for the event,” Broadbent says. “We bring the kids every year. It’s one of the safest places to go trick or treating.” Other events at the shopping center include a Strawberry Festival in June, an Apple Festival in October and a Holiday Lights Spectacular in December.

Flooding risk and noise pollution in Old Mystic
Homes in the Old Mystic Town Center are more susceptible to flooding because they’re located where Haleys Brook and the Mystic River come together. Homes near Red Brook and its West Branch, Fishtown Brook and Bindloss Brook are also more prone to flood waters, though most of these areas are undeveloped open spaces. While most of the neighborhood is noise pollution-free, properties along Interstate 95, which borders the neighborhood, can get noisy.
