The Poquonnock River Boardwalk stretches across a portion of the Poquonnock Bridge neighborhood.
A strong job market amidst Connecticut’s coastal landscape
The village of Poquonock Bridge takes its name from the Algonquin Indian language. Poquonock – which has five different known spellings – means cleared land, which locals have prime access to. Realtor Heidi Cordray of Carrington Real Estate Services emphasizes that Poquonock Bridge residents benefit from proximity to parks, beaches and recreational spaces. “You’ve right there on the beach, the inlet is right there, and there’s plenty of hiking, canoeing and kayaking,” she says. Despite its location amidst coastal Connecticut’s thriving landscape, Poquonock Bridge also draws residents for its proximity to major employers. “People choose the area mostly due to work,” Cordray says. “Poquonock Bridge is next to big employers like Pfizer and General Dynamics. There are a lot of job opportunities here.”
Poquonnock Bridge is named for the river crossing and is a peaceful neighborhood.
Enveloped by Connecticut’s woodlands and shores
Community parks and natural reserves encapsulate Poquonock Bridge in green. Patches of open spaces, such as Raheem Carter Park and Central Avenue Park, are peppered throughout the neighborhood, many with playgrounds. Sutton Park features softball fields and is home to the Groton Skatepark.
Residents can immerse themselves in the Connecticut wildlife at nearby reserves and trailheads. Wheatgrass and reeds tower over the wooded pathways and bridges of the Poquonnock Bridge Boardwalk, a mile-long out-and-back trail that hugs the riverbank. Accessible directly from the village, the walkway also has a playground for kids. On the opposite side of the neighborhood, Haley Farm State Park offers multi-use trails that weave through a historic sequence of hand-built stone walls.
The Bluff Point State Park hugs the southern side of the village, spanning 800 acres of blended coastal woodlands and tidal wetlands that edge up to rocky, course-shelled beaches along the Puquonnock River. Hiking and biking trails snake throughout the peninsula, offering a glimpse of Connecticut wildlife hidden in the patches of ponds and eelgrass beds within the park. Recreationists take to the river’s calm waters for stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking or set up along the water’s edge to catch snapper bluefish, striped bass and flounder.
The Groton Public Library graces the edge of the Poquonnock Bridge neighborhood.
Proximity to Groton Public Library and Groton Community Center
Apart from the many events and concerts that happen throughout Poquonock Bridge’s surrounding parks, the neighborhood also benefits from the robust events calendar of the Groton Public Library. Located just north of the village, the library hosts regularly scheduled happenings for folks of all ages, from summer crafts and teen art to guest authors and adult writing workshops.
Located within the neighborhood, Groton Community Center also plays a significant role in the community and surrounding area. “They have all types of activities,” Cordray says. “My grandchildren take karate there, but they have everything from pickleball to afterschool and preschool programs.” Other offerings include sporting leagues for all ages, workshops, classes and summer camps.
Neatly kept lawns, and quiet streets make the Poquonnock Bridge desirable.
Minimalistic ranch styles that vary in size
The humble homes in Poquonock Bridge cluster along streets branching out from Midway Oval, a tear-shaped street that makes up the village’s main residential street. Minimalistic ranch homes are most common here. “Poquonock Bridge used to be military housing,” Cordray says. “In 1938, it was practically demolished, and the Groton City converted it to residential housing.” Varying in size, these houses sometimes feature duplex layouts with shared driveways or may boast six bedrooms across 1,850 square feet. Homes typically range in price from $125,000 to around $350,000, though larger examples may fetch up to $758,000.

Graduates matriculate to Robert E. Fitch Senior High School. The B-plus-rated school offers an International Baccalaureate Middle Years program for sixth through tenth grade students interested in pursuing an IB Diploma. Juniors and seniors may then choose between the IB Career-Related Programme or the IB Diploma Programme. Home of the Falcons, Fitch High School also receives high marks for sports, clubs and activities, which include cross country, field hockey and soccer.
