Between Hagerstown, Maryland and Western Pennsylvania
Cearfoss sits at the conflux of several two-lane highways north of Hagerstown, one of the last clusters of homes before Washington County, Maryland gives way to southern Pennsylvania. “It’s a great location for commuters to Frederick County or to Martinsburg,” says Molly Marsh-Riley, a sales associate with Marsh Realty who has over 10 years of experience in the area. “Taxes tend to be cheaper in Washington County, so that draws buyers looking to get more house for the money or to get away from the clutter of the city.” It’s more rural than other neighborhoods outside the city limits, but residents enjoy access to major interstates that help keep them connected to modern convenience when it is wanted. There are a few small businesses close to the neighborhood, and shopping destinations in Hagerstown are never far away. Strong schools, including faith-based alternative options, round out the quiet country lifestyle available to prospective buyers in this Western Maryland community.

Homes around the Cearfoss roundabout
Prospective buyers will find most of the housing stock in Cearfoss concentrated around the roundabout. American Foursquares built in the mid-1800s, turn-of-the-century Craftsman bungalows and collections of Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals can all be found here, clustered onto small lots that are separated from the highway by small concrete walkways and strips of front lawn. Moving north from the intersection, large Modern Traditional builds begin to dominate the horizon. “It’s pretty common to see lots at a couple of acres out there,” Marsh-Riley says. Depending on the build year, the status of any renovations and the size of the lots, prices for single-family homes can range from around $200,000 to over $400,000. First-time buyers can also take advantage of grant programs from the United States Department of Agriculture. “Although Cearfoss is outside city limits, it’s a USDA-eligible loan area since it's defined as rural,” Marsh-Riley says. “Hagerstown Home Store offers homeowner education and workshop courses, which can be really helpful for first-time buyers as well.”
