Subdivisions and Colonials in the farmland of Washington County
A variety of home styles are available in Downsville. Toward the intersection of the highways, there are several Colonial-style homes built in the mid-1800s. These tend to sit on closely clustered, fenced-in lots and are set back from the two-lane Downsville Pike by hardly more than a porch and a small strip of grass. These homes can cost anywhere from $145,000 to around $320,000 depending on the status of any renovations. The newer subdivisions on the north side of the neighborhood tend to offer more spacious front and backyards. Ranch-styles, Cape Cods and Modern Traditional builds with colonial features, constructed mainly between the 1950s and early 2000s, line these weaving country roads and price between $290,000 and $550,000 depending on the size of the lot and the build year.Picnics and baseball at the Downsville Ruritan
The Downsville Ruritan is the neighborhood’s community park, which features a picnic shelter and a baseball diamond surrounded by swaths of farmland. The banks of the Potomac River are just 2 miles south of Downsville, where folks can visit the historic McMahon’s Mill or the Big Slackwater Viewpoint of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Park. This vista looks out over the river and sits along the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath, a hiking and biking trail that traces the Potomac all the way to Washington, D.C. Marty Snook Park is about 5 miles north of Downsville in Halfway. This extensive outdoor complex is home to several playgrounds, the Halfway Little League baseball complex, a swimming pool and the Central Bark Dog Park.Williamsport High School since 1970
Downsville children begin their academic journey by attending Fountain Rock Elementary School, which scores a B-minus from Niche. They may then attend Springfield Middle, Niche’s No. 2 Best Public Middle School in the county, which earns a score of B. Students finish at Williamsport High, which has served the community since its founding in 1970 and ranks a B-minus.Camping, mini-golf and picnic baskets at Jellystone
Downsville is just a 3-mile trip away from one of Washington County’s most frequented theme parks. “Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resort is a great family campground,” Marsh-Riley says. “We bring our RV over there, but there are cabins, and a lot of people set up tents to do things the old-fashioned way.” While there are multiple Jellystone Park locations throughout the country, this is the only one in Maryland. The resort features a massive list of amenities, including a water park, an arcade and a mini golf course.Driving along Downsville Pike
Downsville lends its name to Downsville Pike, the neighborhood's main thoroughfare. Most of the community sits at the intersection of Downsville Pike and Maryland Route 63, a two-lane country highway that provides the most direct access to Interstate 81. This is the quickest way for residents to make the 13-mile trip north to Hagerstown Regional Airport, where they can catch direct flights to vacation destinations like Florida and South Carolina.Deliteful Dairy Farm and Cheesery
Just 2 miles north on Route 63, Downsville residents can pick up milk, eggs, butter and meat at Deliteful Dairy. Since 1831, this farm has been operated by the same family, who began selling their own products commercially in 2016. Customers can also indulge in fresh sandwiches, seasonal milkshakes and ice cream nachos at the Deliteful Dairy Cheesery. Local produce is available 3 miles south of the neighborhood at Housers Produce Farm, and at Linden Hall Farm and Orchard 4 miles north. Daily household necessities can be found at Target and Sam’s Club in Halfway, located in shopping centers surrounding the Valley Mall. This collection of over 100 retailers and restaurants is a popular weekend stop, home to casual eateries like Primanti Bros. Restaurant and Bar and to the Regal movie theater.
