The convenience of Hagerstown’s East End
The East End of Hagerstown, Maryland, is a mostly residential neighborhood where duplexes old and new line the tightly packed urban streets. “East End is popular for its convenience — it’s very walkable, and everything is within reach,” says Shirley Bayer, associate broker with Re/Max Achiever who has 35 years of professional experience in the area. “Fairgrounds Park in the north part of the neighborhood has nice walking paths and amenities, there’s shopping in the south part and it’s very easy to get to the Dual Highway or to Eastern Boulevard. It may not be the center of town, but it doesn’t feel like you’re very far removed from it when you’re there.” While the neighborhood is most popular with renters looking for multifamily homes, there are single-family houses speckled throughout, and zoning for one of the best high schools in the district recommends the community to family-oriented buyers. Walkability to Hagerstown’s developing downtown district adds to East End’s appeal.

Multifamily homes in Hagerstown
Prospective buyers are drawn to this Hagerstown neighborhood by the promise of value. “You’ll find more moderately priced properties in the East End generally,” Bayer says. “There are more duplexes and multifamily homes in this part of town.” Many of these Italianate duplexes were built in the late 1800s and are set back from the sidewalks by concrete staircases, while others built in the 1950s favor a Colonial Revival style and have flat walkways leading to covered front porches. These all feature small fenced-in backyards and are priced between $125,000 and $300,000 depending on the condition of the property. On the easternmost edge of the neighborhood, large two-story Modern Traditional duplexes, built in the early 2000s with garages, range in price from around $300,000 to $350,000. Single-family ranch-style homes are also available throughout the neighborhood. Toward Antietam Creek in the south of the neighborhood, some of the houses share walls with neighbors, while others sit on more spacious lots beneath mature, leafy trees. These single-family homes range in price from around $250,000 to about $350,000.

From Fairgrounds Park to golf at Hagerstown Greens
East End locals can take advantage of their proximity to Fairgrounds Park, which features the Hagerstown Skate Park, an ice rink and several outdoor athletic fields. A walking path connects Fairgrounds to the fishing pond at Pangborn Park. Funkhouser Park features several basketball courts and a baseball diamond that plays host to the Hagerstown Protect Our Nation’s Youth Baseball team, founded in the 1950s to encourage healthy activity for area children. The public 18-hole golf course at Hagerstown Greens is also nearby. “That’s a nice course for beginners,” Bayer says. “It’s not too intimidating.” In fall 2024, the Hagerstown Field House is expected to open. This 114,000-square-foot indoor facility will house two turf fields, multipurpose hard courts, a restaurant, a fitness area and additional retail space.

Grocery stores and an Amish market
East End residents can shop for groceries at Aldi, Lidl, Wegmans and Weis Markets, all clustered around Dual Highway. This collection of shopping centers is also home to several eateries, including popular brunch spot J’s Diner and Tortuga Bar and Grill. J’s Diner, only open until the early afternoon, has twice been voted the best breakfast spot in the Tri-State by Hagerstown Magazine’s Hot List for creative dishes like its crab hash, while Tortuga offers a Caribbean-American fusion menu, draft beer and a comfortable dining room with several TVs for customers looking to watch baseball and soccer. The nearby Pennsylvania Dutch Market is also a draw for locals. “It’s only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, but on those days, that parking lot really fills up quickly,” Bayer says. There are multiple active vendors in the market, including the Hagerstown Dutch Bakery and the Farmer’s Cook House, which serves homemade breakfast and hot lunch platters.

Baseball, theater and Hub City Vinyl
Downtown Hagerstown, just under 2 miles from the neighborhood, offers an easily accessible collection of entertainment. “There are sidewalks the whole way,” Bayer says. “You can get downtown in no time at all.” The Maryland Theatre is a historic performance venue with stage productions on weekends, while the brand-new Meritus Park is the stadium for the local minor league team, the Flying Boxcars. Hub City Vinyl, Maryland’s largest record store, is just down the road, and it also hosts live music out of a restored venue. Neighbors can learn about Hagerstown’s history and significance at the Jonathan Hager House Museum or take children for a hands-on science experience at Discovery Station.
