A revitalizing community on the north side of Hagerstown
Hagerstown is a Western Maryland city that is in the throes of a revitalization. New development in the downtown district has spurred interest in the more residential parts of the community like the North End, a collection of mostly single-family homes on the gridline urban streets. Constructed primarily between the late 1800s and the 1950s, the dramatic influx of new industry has begun to shift the perspective on this quiet country town on the outskirts of Maryland. “There’s a general attitude that Hagerstown is now what Frederick used to be,” says Solomon Zaldivar, Realtor at Corner House Realty, who has been selling in Maryland for 10 years. “The development of the area has been unavoidable, but a lot of people prefer the small-town vibe that you get with living here. At the same time, there’s a lot of convenience that comes along with being just across the street from restaurants and development. We’ve seen the North End getting increasingly popular because of that.”

Historic single-family homes on urban lots
While there are several duplexes, generally priced between $340,000 and $500,000, most of the neighborhood is comprised of detached houses. “There’s way more single-family homes than townhouses or duplexes out here,” Zaldivar says. “Because of the difference in price for single-family homes between Washington County and its neighbors, they’re just so much more popular.” These come in a variety of styles, including American Foursquares built between 1920 and 1940. Some were constructed even earlier. “There are a few that were built in the 1800s, so renovation is a big thing,” Zaldivar says. “You don’t want to go too far, you want to keep the characteristics of the property. But any time you get a house from that time, you have to do a fair amount of upkeep to make sure it stands.” Other options include Cape Cods and bungalows, often with Craftsman features, and ranch-style homes on spacious city lots. Homes are often clustered closely together in the city streets and can cost anywhere from $280,000 to almost $500,000 depending on the number of bedrooms and the size of the property.

Groceries and more along the Dual Highway corridor
Residents can shop for groceries at Aldi, Lidl and Weis, all located along the Dual Highway corridor. There is a second Weis to the north side of the neighborhood on Sharpsburg Pike, along with the Pennsylvania Dutch Market. This collection of craft shops and restaurants, such as Ben’s BBQ and Lapp’s Gourmet Donuts, draws visitors from across the tri-state area. The Walmart Supercenter, where folks can pick up household necessities, is about a 3-mile drive west along Dual Highway. The Valley Mall is about 3 miles farther south, home to over 100 retailers and eateries. Nights out can also be spent closer to home at Broad Axe, a casual American pub with a comfortable back patio.

From downtown ball games to the Hagerstown Speedway
The North End is right at the edge of the city, so locals are within walking distance of attractions like Meritus Park, home of the local minor league baseball team. Hub City Vinyl, Maryland’s largest brick-and-mortar record store, is also nearby, and hosts concerts at their restored historic venue frequently. Discovery Station is a science museum where kids can learn about the natural world through hands-on exhibits, and the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts at City Park will occasionally feature live music in their garden. When looking for excitement out of the city, locals can head 8 miles west to the Hagerstown Speedway, the oldest dirt racetrack in the state, for the stock car derbies that take place every weekend from early spring until late autumn.

Junior Police Academy enrollment at Northern Middle School
North End students can begin at Potomac Heights Elementary School, which earns a B-minus from Niche and is within walking distance of most area homes. They then proceed to Northern Middle, which scores a B and is one of four middle schools in the city where students can apply to join the Hagerstown Police Department’s Junior Police Academy, open to 7th and 8th grade students. North Hagerstown High scores an A-minus and is Niche’s No. 2 Best Public High School in Washington County. The North Hagerstown Hubs football team has enjoyed a crosstown rivalry with South Hagerstown High School since both institutions opened in 1956.

Athletics, art and the outdoors in Hagerstown
North End neighbors Fairgrounds Park, an extensive outdoor complex that features several soccer fields, a skate park, the Hagerstown ice rink and a BMX track. There is a walking path between Fairgrounds and Pangborn Park, home to a regularly stocked fishing pond and several tennis courts. Residents looking for less rigorous outdoor recreation can head just south to City Park to feed the ducks around Lower Lake and explore the classical art collection at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts. Golfers will appreciate proximity to the 18-hole championship course at Fountain Head Country Club, founded in the early 1920s. The club also offers a fitness room, a swimming pool and a popular tap room.

The Dual Highway leads straight into the heart of Hagerstown.
Commuting around the tri-state area
Once famed for its location at the convergence of Maryland’s railways, Hagerstown today sits at the conflux of several important highways. “You’ll sometimes hear Hagerstown called Hub City because of where it is,” Zaldivar says. “It sits at the crossroads of Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, so a lot of appeal comes from the ability to get pretty much anywhere.” Route 11 and Dual Highway, also known as Route 40, trace the North End’s western and southern boundaries. Route 11 is the quickest way for residents to reach Hagerstown Regional Airport, a 6-mile trip north. The airport offers direct flights to Florida and South Carolina for vacationers. Dual Highway is the best way to get to Interstates 81 and 70, both of which provide major connections throughout the tri-state area.
