The residential hub of Maryland’s Hub City
Hagerstown, Maryland was once known as Hub City due to its position at the conflux of the state’s major railways. Today, the city retains this moniker due to its location in between three major highways serving the tri-state area of Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Recently, the city has seen a renewed boom of interest as people move from neighboring counties, and the West End, a primarily residential district, has surged in popularity. This neighborhood is well-situated for commuters looking for highway access. It is also popular with first-time buyers looking to escape the bustle of downtown without sacrificing convenience to it. “Hagerstown is a cool area. It’s nice to see it growing before it explodes,” says Realtor Bethany Gosnell with The Agency Frederick, who has lived in Maryland since 2006. “There’s a lot of things here that people don’t know about because they get overshadowed by the surrounding areas. But it’s not an apples-to-apples comparison because it is such a different environment, even though we’re only one county over.” This boon of modern amenities includes a revitalized restaurant scene, a brand-new ballpark and baseball team and a well-regarded art museum. However, residents of West End are a quick drive from a rural retreat on the Appalachian Trail or from the wide-open farmland of Washington County. A strong school district completes the picture of the West End as a landing spot for young families in Hagerstown.

Various styles atop the rocky Washington County soil
The streets of West End are lined with densely clustered homes. Small front lawns speckle either side of the road, with houses set back from the sidewalks by stubby front stoops and walkways. Street parking adds to the sensation of clutter, as very few homes in this neighborhood have driveways. Spaces are often set beneath tall mature trees. Duplexes, mostly built in the early 1900s, tend to price between $190,000 and $300,000 and often come with Colonial Revival features. Pockets of brick row houses on the south end of the neighborhood tend to cost anywhere from $190,000 to $220,000. Cape Cods, both traditional and with Craftsman features, are also ubiquitous. Prices range from around $180,000 to almost $320,000. Prospective buyers may notice that basements are not a typical feature of many area homes. “Western Maryland in general has a higher elevation than even Frederick County,” Gosnell says. “The soil is very rocky, so basements aren’t as common as they are in other places. There’s also a lot of limestone in the soil, so if people do have a basement, they’ll want to have a radon detector.” Limestone contains higher-than-average amounts of uranium, which releases odorless and colorless radon gas as it breaks down. Detectors in basements are a vital step for homeowners in preventing any associated complications.
As the West End gets closer to downtown, the neighborhoods begin to have a more urban feel.

Groceries and restaurants along the Dual Highway
West End residents can shop for groceries at Aldi, Lidl and Weis, all located just over 2 miles east along the Dual Highway corridor. Two miles west, they can pick up daily household necessities at Walmart Supercenter and weekend project materials at The Home Depot. Other popular options draw visitors from neighboring counties. “The Pennsylvania Dutch Market on Potomac Avenue is something people drive to Washington County for,” Gosnell says. “There isn’t another one nearby, except for maybe actually in Pennsylvania.” There are casual eateries throughout the neighborhood, including Café Del Sol, a local chain known for its fusion cuisine, and Foster’s on the Point, a pub that serves craft beer and modern American fare.

The development of downtown Hagerstown
A recent wave of development has brought new infrastructure to Hagerstown, including Meritus Park, a 4,000-seat stadium where folks can cheer on the local minor league baseball team. “People here really take pride in being able to say they have their own baseball team,” Gosnell says. “The team hasn’t had the best start, but they’re very popular and that’s only going to get bigger as more people move to town.” Closer to the neighborhood, locals can explore Hagerstown’s history as a railroad hub at the Roundhouse Museum. Discovery Station just under 1 mile away is a hands-on children’s science museum. Hub City Vinyl, Maryland’s largest record store, also hosts live music from their restored historic venue on weekends.

The Junior Police Academy at Western Heights Middle
In West End, children attending public schools begin their education at Salem Avenue Elementary School. SAES earns a B-minus from Niche and is located in the center of the neighborhood, which puts it within walking distance of most homes. Students will then proceed to Western Heights Middle, also rated B-minus. Western Heights is one of four middle schools in the city that partners with the Hagerstown Police Department’s Junior Police Academy, open to interested students in grades 7 and 8. At South Hagerstown High, which scores a B, students complete their education. The SHHS football team has enjoyed a friendly crosstown rivalry with North Hagerstown High since the schools opened in 1956.

Disc golf at Ditto Farms Regional Park and hiking the Appalachian Trail
On the south side of the neighborhood, locals can gather at Hellane Park for rec league games on one of the three baseball fields. The park also features a small playground with a jungle gym and a swing set. National Road Park is a pocket park on Washington Street that was designed by residents of the community that features a unique rope-based play set. In addition, the West End is a short 4-mile drive from Ditto Farms Regional Park. “Ditto Farms right on the outskirts of the city is a nationally-ranked disc golf course,” Gosnell says. “A lot of people travel pretty far to play there. And we’re right in the Blue Ridge Mountains, right by the Appalachian Trail. You can camp, hike, whatever you like to do." Popular spots to hike include the Thurston Griggs Trail 10 miles east of the neighborhood. For less demanding recreational opportunities, folks can visit Hagerstown City Park, just under a mile outside of West End. There is a paved walking path around Lower Lake, a band shell for outdoor concerts and the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, which exhibits both work by local artists and historic pieces from the founders’ collection.

Dual Highway or route 40, travels straight through West End.
Commuting from the tri-state’s highway hub
Hagerstown sits at the conflux of three major highways for Maryland and the tri-state area. “You can get onto Interstate 70 or 81 quickly from anywhere in Hagerstown,” Gosnell says. “Compared to surrounding counties, the commute is all highway, which is a huge benefit.” Interstate 81 is the closest major highway to the West End, connecting it 5 miles north to Hagerstown Regional Airport and 7 miles south to Interstate 70. I-70 is the quickest way for residents to make the 35-mile trip east to Frederick. The Dual Highway, also known as Route 40, bisects the neighborhood and provides quick access to Hagerstown’s downtown district.
