Country life, from the creek to the Hagerstown Speedway
Wilson-Conococheague is a rural stretch of land west of Hagerstown, Maryland that is threaded through by Conococheague Creek and split in half by Maryland Highway 40. It is a small country town where neighbors catch up at the general store on weekdays and head to the stock car racetrack on weekends. “People like to be near the creek for fishing and boating,” says Realtor Kaleb Hurley, an auctioneer with Legacy Realty who has over 10 years of experience selling in the tri-state area of Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. “There are good people who live there, who create a strong community. It’s quiet and close-knit, and there are good faith-based schools for those who want them.” The community is isolated 8 miles west of Hagerstown, but access to three major highways ensures connection to the conveniences of city life when necessary. For the most part, though, folks who live in Wilson-Conococheague prefer fishing in the creek, weekends at the Hagerstown Speedway and the quiet solitude of country living.

A mix of home styles on the banks of the Conococheague
All through Wilson-Conococheague, prospective owners will find a mix of detached single-family homes. American Foursquares built between the late-1800s and 1920s, midcentury ranch-styles and Cape Cods and Modern Traditional builds from the early 2000s are sprinkled across the wooded hills. Homes are set back from the road by long, narrow driveways, sitting on spacious green lots that frequently have backyards large enough to accommodate above-ground pools. Prices for homes in need of renovation range from $90,000 to around $130,000, while move-in ready houses will cost between $220,000 and $460,000 depending on the size of the property. “Outside of the city of Hagerstown, most homes are on well and septic, and Wilson-Conococheague is no different,” Hurley says. Another commonplace sight prospective owners should be aware of is basement radon detectors. Much of Washington County’s geography is made up of uranium-rich limestone, and when this uranium breaks down, odorless and colorless radon gas can be released. Detectors are an important step in preventing any related complications.

Floating along the Conococheague
As summer weather reaches its peak, residents of Wilson-Conococheague will notice peculiar cargo floating down the Conococheague Creek. “I don’t know that there’s a lot of recreation there, but folks do love to kayak or float down the creek,” Hurley says. On warm days, neighbors pack their rafts into one car, making sure to bring an extra one for the cooler, and head 14 miles up Williamsport Pike to Green Castle Mini Mart in Pennsylvania. Once arrived, they register their car to avoid towing expenses and launch into the creek, leisurely floating back down to the Historic Wilson Bridge Picnic Area at the westernmost edge of the neighborhood. The creek is also popular with local anglers, who kayak out into the cool water to fish for trophy fish like rainbow trout and smallmouth bass.
The Wilson stone bridge was built in 1819 by Silas Harry as part of the old National Road.

Community farm markets and steak by the racetrack
Most stores directly in the neighborhood are long-standing community staples. “There are a lot of small family businesses. There are good locally run meat markets and produce stands,” Hurley says. There really aren’t a lot of big corporate retailers, which really builds a sense of comradery and community.” Among these are the Wilson Store, a country market that sells everything from pantry staples to antique furniture. Ernst Country Market has a more extensive grocery selection, though fresh produce will need to be purchased at Williams Produce Stand. All three of these stores close between 5 and 6 p.m., so any after-hours needs will require an 8-mile trip into Hagerstown, where folks can supplement their hauls at Walmart Supercenter and Target. Hunters and sportsmen can have repairs made or order custom firearms at Hafer’s Guns, which has served the community since 2000. Restaurants along Route 40 include casual eateries like El Castillo Pizzeria & Tex-Mex and 40 West Deli, while Zach Greenlee’s Trackside Steak & Seafood is a favorite stop on race days at the Hagerstown Speedway. And Sweetsies Eats & Treats is a roadside sandwich shop where folks stop for ice cream on summer afternoons.
