North Shore

North Shore

$1,686,378 Average Value

In a north-facing coastal area of Oʻahu, North Shore is both a commercial surfing mecca and a blend of rural and waterfront communities. Locals here are proud to maintain a rich, generations-strong vibe that “keeps the country, country” even though some areas of North Shore are buzzing tourist destinations today.

Because of its montage of high energy in some areas, simpler pace in others, and raw beauty all around, neighborhoods within North Shore like Haleiwa and Waialua are highly sought. Throughout North Shore, home prices vary, with a median around $930,000. Here, you’ll find spectacular mansions overlooking Waimea Bay, sprawling custom estates in Sunset Hills, oceanfront homes with modern lines and flat roofs, and homes nestled among palms on rocky coves. You’ll also see more traditional two-story homes in Haleiwa as well as cute bungalows in inland Waialua. Condominium complexes dot North Shore as well, especially along the waterfront.

Public school students can attend Sunset Beach Elementary in North Shore, steps from the oceanfront. They can then move up to the Waialua Intermediate and High School, bedecked with a stunning coastal mural along with the phrase “E Malama I Ke Kai’ which means “respect the ocean” in Hawaiian. GreatSchools scores Waialua High an 8 out of 10 for college readiness, and recently the school’s robotics team took the top title in the international championship tournament.

Parks and beaches are integral to North Shore, and one of its most renowned is Alii Beach Park where you can set up your shade and walk the dogs, surf, swim and picnic all day. You could also opt for the uncrowded shoreline of Ehukai Beach Park, go sailing in the blue waters of Waimea Bay, or explore the tidepools at Shark's Cove. You may even get a chance to feed some local chickens at Sunset Beach Park. At the Banzai Skate Park in Pupukea, skaters drop-in to graffiti-splashed bowls.

Cross the beautiful arches of Haleiwa Bridge into downtown Haleiwa, and you’ll find there’s always a line wrapping around the famous Matsumoto for shaved ice. A top pick nearby for homestyle Mexican is the festive Cholos Margarita Bar; and for delicious cocktails and Hawaiian platters, you’ll want to dine at Haleiwa Beach House seaside. A great spot to indulge your sweet craving is the colorful Wailua Bakery and Juice Bar, where locals go for fresh smoothies and acai bowls made with locally grown produce. Tourist and townies alike also love the pies, pastries and hot sandwiches at Ted’s Bakery.

North Shore is home to the iconic Surf ‘N Sea, a longstanding highly regarded surf shop in Haleiwa frequented by world-class surfers. Whether you’re just getting your feet wet, or you live for the saltwater, Surf ‘N Sea offers an impressive selection of surf, paddleboard and kayak gear for purchase or rent. Going decades strong, professional surfers come together from all over the world to compete in North Shore’s Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach championships.

For essentials, locals frequent the convenient Ace Hardware on Kamehameha Highway and pick up groceries at the smaller Malama Market or the larger Foodland Grocery store. Offering island living that ranges from glitzy to wilderness, and oceanfront to lush inland, North Shore is a friendly surf destination with a historic, homegrown appeal.
