Tucked between the curves of Huntington Village and Huntington Harbor on Long Island’s North Shore, Halesite is a little hamlet that bears the name of a Revolutionary War hero and spy, Nathan Hale. Today, the hamlet has a small downtown and a ton of outdoor recreation on the harbor, which is lined with parks and marinas. It has a quiet, quaint atmosphere, but it’s just 3 miles from one of the busiest Long Island Rail Road stations on the island, so there are plenty of options for commuters.

Boating on the bay, fishing spots and athletic fields
Boating, fishing and swimming are all big parts of life in Halesite. Locals’ love of boating is clear even at a glance — there are multiple marinas and yacht clubs in the little community, plus a fishing charter. Halesite Park is small, but it offers gorgeous views of Huntington Bay and a little pier where locals fish. Parking can be tricky at the park, though, as the businesses on either side tend to use the lot. Mill Dam Park is a far bigger green space, separated from the bay only by Mill Dam Road. With athletic fields where local teams play baseball, soccer and lacrosse, the park also has a lake for fishing. Heckscher Park is just outside the hamlet, offering shaded walking paths, tennis courts and a pond alongside The Heckscher Museum of Art. The museum is home to over 2,500 pieces of art. As part of the Town of Huntington, locals can also pay a fee to gain access to any of the town’s nine beaches. For golfers, Huntington Crescent Club and Huntington Country Club are both less than 3 miles from Halesite.

Homes usually start at around $650,000
Halesite’s wide residential streets lack sidewalks, but the split-levels, Cape Cods, ranch-style homes and new traditionals lining these streets often have yards with a little breathing room. A few smaller lots are around a tenth of an acre, but many measure in at a third of an acre or more. Fixer-uppers start at as low as $500,000, but most houses start closer to $650,000. An updated waterfront home or the occasional newly built house can sometimes climb as high as $2.3 million.

A celebration of local boating, this festival involves live music, food trucks and local vendors, with a special emphasis put on an overall nautical theme. Heckscher Park also hosts a wide range of events, including the Long Island Fall Festival and a Community Arts Festival where local artists sell their art and kids paint on easels set up in the grass. The Village of Huntington offers bigger events — many of which draw thousands — less than 2 miles away.
Local eateries and shops along New York Avenue
Overlooking Huntington Harbor, New York Avenue is Halesite’s main street. According to Robert Bianco, the office manager at Island Advantage Realty, locals love spending the evening strolling up and down New York Avenue, enjoying its shops and restaurants. All of Halesite’s restaurants are along this street, including T.K.’s Galley for breakfast, DJ’s Clam Shack, which is known for its fresh lobster rolls, and Posto Pazzo for a slightly more upscale Italian meal. And then there’s Prime: An American Kitchen & Bar. Located right on the bay, the fine dining restaurant has a reputation that travels far past the borders of Long Island. It’s been written about in The New York Times, Newsday, The Knot, which is a wedding planning website known for discussing America’s best venues, and more. The restaurant was designed to look like a classic boathouse on Boston’s Charles River. The little downtown has bait and tackle shops, salons and spas, a Pilates studio and more. Essentials like veterinary clinic, pharmacy and King Kullen are also located along New York Avenue.
