Location between two Western Maryland cities gave this town its name
It is often said that, in real estate, location is everything. That is certainly the case with Halfway, a Maryland town of just over 10,000 with a name chosen due to its position between Hagerstown and Williamsport. “Halfway is central. It has good access to the highways,” says Solomon Zaldivar, Realtor at Corner House Realty, who has been selling in Maryland for 10 years. “There’s not a lot of farmland out there - more of a suburban environment. There’s a slow turnover because people tend to get these houses and stick with them.” Locals are never far from shopping destinations, outdoor recreation facilities or the winding banks of the Potomac River in this midcentury community, and a boom of economic development has caught the attention of new inhabitants from surrounding counties.

Midcentury homes between Hagerstown and Williamsport
Home styles in Halfway reflect its midcentury development history. “Most of the homes around here are ranch-styles, Cape Cods and cottages that were built in or around the 1950s. It’s also fairly small, so houses don’t pop up that often,” Zaldivar says. “They mostly have small front yards, small backyards and a driveway if you’re lucky. If the homes have large lots, they rarely show up on the market.” The median price for single-family homes sits around $325,000, while multifamily duplexes can range in price from around $240,000 to about $300,000.
Ranch-style architecture is prevalent throughout Halfway, often accompanied by modest-sized yards.

Converging highways and the Hagerstown Regional Airport
Interstates 70 and 81 converge at the area’s southwestern edge, making commutes to West Virginia, Pennsylvania and the rest of Maryland simple. “Hagerstown is sometimes called Hub City because of where it is, and you see that more and more because people are willing to add a bit to their commute to get what they want in a home,” Zaldivar says. Hagerstown Regional Airport is accessible via I-81, offering direct flights to vacation destinations such as Orlando, Florida, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

For a more naturalistic experience, locals can head to Hagerstown City Park to feed the ducks around Lower Lake and peruse the permanent collection at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts. The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath is also nearby, a partially paved hiking trail that traces the flow of the Potomac River all the way to Washington, D.C.

This nearby neighborhood is home to many long-standing area restaurants and businesses, such as Krumpe’s Do-Nuts, where tradition has dictated the pastries be made by hand every night from 7 to 11 p.m. since 1934.
