Hallwood offers laidback country living on the Eastern Shore of Virginia
Hallwood is a rural community on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, 16 miles from Chincoteague. Buyers move here to be close to Chincoteague’s beaches and NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility, a large launch base. Real estate prices in Hallwood are significantly lower than in and immediately surrounding Chincoteague, so buyers here can save money by being a little further out. The town attracts those looking for a rural lifestyle, with most homes being acreage properties far from any large town or city. Hallwood’s charming historic houses and acreage estates bring in buyers looking for laidback country living, and nearby attractions like NASA rocket launches and the annual Chincoteague Pony Penning offer occasional excitement in this otherwise sleepy community.
Historic homes and land listings
Though Hallwood’s real estate listings are mostly land, buyers here can find a unique variety of listings, including historic farmhouses, 1950s Cape Cods and even colonial-era estates dating back to the early 1800s. Most listings here sit on at least an acre. Recent sales prices range from around $100,000 to $300,000 for most single-family homes. However, a fully equipped farm or 1800s-era estate can list for $1 million to $2.5 million. Buyers can find land for as little as $5,000, and land listings sometimes exceed $100,000, depending on acreage.

Twenty-one miles east, Assateague Beach is a scenic waterfront spot for swimming and viewing Chincoteague ponies. “You can see the ponies year-round from there, and that’s a big attraction,” says Realtor Ben Clark with Dockside Properties.
Small-town restaurants and grocery stores
Hallwood’s only dining establishment is El Crucero, a small taco shop and Mexican grocery store. Four miles north, Temperanceville is home to Par 4 Bar & Grill, a laidback American restaurant and sports bar, and Corner Mart, a small gas station market with snacks and some groceries.
