Set deep into the Pinelands of Hamilton Township, Mizpah is a secluded community located 24 miles west of Atlantic City. A New York firm of cloakmakers purchased 1.5 acres of land and established Mizpah as a Russian-Jewish colony in 1892. The original commune held a train station, clothing factory, synagogue and about 30 houses for the 100 people who moved here for work. By 1910, the clothing workshops and many of the residents moved away due to financial troubles. The Mizpah synagogue closed around 1914. The neighborhood today maintains its private, rural appeal, with only a few businesses and homes among the area’s 1.63 square miles. “It’s stayed about the same over the years,” says Joe Jacobs, who’s been running Bertuzzi's Market with his wife for over 55 years. “We’re in the Pinelands, so the growth is restricted.”

Ranch-style homes from the $200,000s
Homes in Mizpah sit on large lots ranging from 1 to 5 acres secluded by the dense Pinelands of South Jersey. Ranch-style houses built primarily between the early- to mid-20th-century are spaced far enough apart to give more privacy than properties in surrounding areas. “We’re very rural,” says Jacobs. “We got farms and woods here, there’s not much social activity.” Homes usually range from two to four bedrooms and sell for $200,000 to $400,000.
Most of the Mizpah home options are modest, often only having 3 bedrooms or less.
Many of the homes in Mizpah have solar panels to assist in energy production.
