New suburban development around farms north of Hampshire
In the far reaches of Chicago’s western suburbs, Henpeck’s name pays homage to the area’s agricultural origins but is now also associated with modern residential development on the rise along the Interstate 90 corridor. Formerly the second-largest milk producer in Illinois at the end of the 19th century, the community's farms and dairies are slowly giving way to new residential subdivisions near truck repair stations and food processing plants. “There’s part of this neighborhood that has been annexed into the village of Hampshire, and there’s been a lot of growth,” says Jay Hedges, Hampshire village manager. “That part is fast-growing, but it’s managed growth.”
