New suburban development around farms north of Hampshire

In the far reaches of Chicago’s western suburbs, Henpeck’s name pays homage to the area’s agricultural origins but is now also associated with modern residential development on the rise along the Interstate 90 corridor. Formerly the second-largest milk producer in Illinois at the end of the 19th century, the community's farms and dairies are slowly giving way to new residential subdivisions near truck repair stations and food processing plants. “There’s part of this neighborhood that has been annexed into the village of Hampshire, and there’s been a lot of growth,” says Jay Hedges, Hampshire village manager. “That part is fast-growing, but it’s managed growth.”

A mix of old and new in Henpeck

Throughout the area, single-family home prices range from $250,000 to $600,000. New communities off Big Timber Road include new construction homes in the Tamms Farm subdivision, which is still being developed ahead of its projected 2025 completion. Lakewood Crossing has been around for 20 years and has over 500 homes, with some duplexes and townhouses that range from $200,000 to $300,000. The community has a clubhouse, pool, recreation area, playground and sand volleyball court.

Allen’s Corner Diner is a throwback to roadside restaurants

There’s a small diner just off Route 20 open for breakfast and lunch. Allen’s Corner Diner has only seven tables and ten stools at the counter, and it has been a part of the community since 1921. Leave the credit and debit cards at home - Allen’s only accepts cash. Other choices for meals out will be in the village of Hampshire. There’s a walk-up counter with no indoor seating at Chick-N-Dip, which specializes in fried chicken. Block’s Fresh Market is a locally owned grocer with a deli and butcher. It’s about 7 miles to the village of Huntley, where there’s a Walmart Supercenter.
