Phoebus is the proud home of Hampton University, a historically Black, private research university with 10 accredited schools, including the School of Engineering and Technology. It can trace its history back to the early 1860s when free Black woman Mary Peake taught students who escaped from slavery under the university’s famous Emancipation Oak tree. The Hampton University Museum is the oldest African American museum in the country.
