Bucolic town next to the Pennsylvania-West Virginia border

Home to less than 3,000 people spread out over nearly 50 square miles, Hanover Township offers a quiet rural community along the Pennsylvania-West Virginia border. “There’s not a whole lot out there; it’s really just small-town living,” says Suzonne Bechtold, a Realtor with Realty Connect with over 25 years of experience in the industry. “There’s no grocery store there, and there’s not any fast food. You’ve got to go to the other cities around there for all that.” While the township embraces a slower pace of life in its verdant landscapes and expansive green spaces, residents have access to major thoroughfares and can travel to neighboring towns for shopping or dining. “It’s conveniently located to U.S. Route 22 and Pennsylvania Route 18, so you can hop into Weirton, West Virginia, in a heartbeat,” Bechtold says.

Hanover Township offers large lots and rustic homes

Country roads wind through the township, and houses sit on spacious, tree-lined lots that average just over an acre. “Everybody built their own little thing out there, so there aren’t any housing complexes,” Bechtold says. Sprawling ranch-style homes are the norm, with the occasional farmhouse or Colonial Revival estate mixed in. Most properties sit in the center of town off Steubenville Pike, but those further from the thoroughfare offer several acres of land and feature outdoor amenities like detached barns, in-ground pools or decks. Prices typically range from $175,000 for a three-bedroom ranch-style home to $600,000 for a four-bedroom Colonial Revival. Homebuyers will also find custom-built properties fetching upwards of $850,000. Hanover Township has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average of 4.

Festivities at the annual Covered Bridge Festival

In addition to its play equipment, Hanover Township Community Park is home to the historic McClurg Bridge. The striking red bridge dates to 1880 and is just one of 23 historic covered bridges in Washington County. The county celebrates these landmarks each September at the Covered Bridge Festival, which includes a festival site at McClurg Bridge – also known as Devil’s Den Bridge. The event marks the start of fall in Hanover Township and includes a car cruise, an apple pie contest, live music and an outdoor market with local craft and food vendors. On the opposite side of U.S. Route 22 is The Pavilion at Star Lake, an outdoor amphitheater and popular concert venue that frequently hosts big-name musicians.
