Midway is small but connected, with major cities nearby

In the southwestern corner of Lincoln County is Midway, where wide open fields and farms surround small collections of homes. Leo Staples owns Staples Farm, his family’s business, and is continuing his parents’ legacy with the help of his children and grandchildren. “Mom and dad bought it in 1971,” Staples says. “My wife and I have been on the farm since 2015. Our children grew up working on Mom and Dad’s vegetable farm. A couple of years ago, they got interested in what we were doing. Now we raise the most amazing pork on earth.” Staples knows first-hand how the Midway community supports each other and the benefits of living in the area. “Oklahoma in general is a great place to raise children,” Staples says. “It is a great place to live. Our taxes are relatively low; insurance is high because of the tornadoes. Other than that, people are friendly, and it’s kind of a fun place to live.” Midway is also home to the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma’s headquarters and Kickapoo Casino. The headquarters campus has buildings dedicated to the police department, childcare center and Kickapoo Tribal Health Center. Throughout Midway, residents have a quiet place to call home, and nearby highways create direct routes to destinations like Oklahoma City and Shawnee.

Manufactured, National and ranch-style homes on large lots

While the area is referred to as Midway, homes have Harrah or McLoud addresses. National, ranch-style and manufactured homes on large lots often sell for less than $100,000 to $240,000. They have gravel driveways and sit away from the main road, giving homeowners some privacy from the occasional driver going down the street. The most expensive properties fall in the nearly $480,000 to $730,000 range because they have lots spanning about 10 to almost 75 acres. “The Kickapoo Turnpike went in about a year and a half ago or so, and there’s just more and more people building out this way,” Staples says. Many homes throughout Midway were built in the ‘90s and early 2000s, though some were built around 2021. Due to the more rural setting, homes run on septic tanks and well water systems.

Taking Highway 62 to Harrah or OKC

Most residential streets are unpaved, red dirt roads covered in gravel. U.S. Highway 62 is paved, though and cuts through Midway, leading about 5 miles to Harrah. Drivers can take Highway 62 to reach downtown Oklahoma City and avoid tolls, but using Interstate 40 for the 34-mile drive can be quicker. Reaching the Will Rogers International Airport in OKC takes less than an hour by using I-40. The 20-mile drive to Shawnee takes less than half an hour. Harrah has the nearest urgent care centers, but Shawnee has the SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital for emergencies.

Four-day school weeks in McLoud Public Schools

Midway is a part of the McLoud Public Schools district, which gets a C-plus from Niche. Kids attend the currently unrated McLoud Early Childhood Center for prekindergarten through first grade. McLoud Elementary gets a B-minus and has second- through third-grade classes. McLoud Intermediate teaches fourth through fifth and receives a C-plus. The McLoud Junior High and McLoud High Schools both earn C-plus ratings. McLoud Public Schools was among several districts that adopted a four-day school week schedule in 2018, which means students are usually not in school on Fridays. Students may be required to attend on Fridays to make up for snow days or holidays.

Getting Italian in Choctaw or burgers on Highway 62

Staples recommends Johnny’s Italian Restaurant in Choctaw. “Johnny is from Italy,” Staples says. “He came to the country probably 30-something years ago. He started washing dishes in New York and worked his way up. ... It’s probably the best Italian in the city area.” Closer to home, the Kickapoo Casino features the Redfork Restaurant. on Highway 62, Gettin’ Smash’D is a food truck that serves smash burgers and Philly cheesesteak sandwiches. Banners signal the entrance to reach the food truck, which is open in the evenings.

Harrah has Harps Food Store for groceries, while Shawnee has many more options, like Walmart. Anyone who wants to order pork from Staples Farm can contact the farm directly to place an order. “We raise hay here, and it’s been a regenerative farm before there was such a thing. Dad was way ahead of his time,” Staples says. “We do sell breeding stock, and we sell ham pulls. ... We have a couple of co-ops that carry our pork. We are a Certified Animal Welfare Approved farm, and we’re reworking on our regenerative certification.”

Fishing and playing in Harrah's Heritage Park

The nearest park is in downtown Harrah. Heritage Park’s playground is near the splash pad, where kids can cool off on hot summer days. The two paved basketball courts are also in the distance. The amphitheater faces the pond, where ducks float on the water and anglers cast lines from the pavilion. Walking trails run along the park’s border and weave through the tree-covered area where the Harrah Farmers Market happens from May through September.

Severe weather is a part of life in Midway

Like the rest of Oklahoma, Midway experiences intense weather throughout the year. Summers bring high temperatures and an increased risk of brush fire. In the spring, severe storms can include hail and tornadoes. Residents can stay informed of severe weather by signing up for county alerts and turning the news on to hear emergency announcements.
