Harrisburg is a town with history and community

Once a prominent stop on the railroad, Harrisburg is a Charlotte suburb that preserves its history. The historic Harrisburg Post Office was built in the 1850s and still stands today. “Our Town maintains a strong sense of community by engagement and volunteerism,” says Kacey Nestor, communications director for the city of Harrisburg. “From coaching our sports teams to volunteering to serve on one of our five Citizens Boards and Commissions, there is always a chance to build a bond in the Harrisburg Community.”

According to the United States Census Bureau, Harrisburg’s population was just under 20,000 in 2023. It’s becoming increasingly popular for residents who work in uptown. “If you think it might be too far of a commute, maybe just take a drive through to see if it might be a good fit,” says Cindy Stetsky, a Realtor with Allen Tate Company. “Some people, for the right place to live, would be willing to drive a few extra minutes.”

As the town has grown, several new subdivisions have recently been established. Harrisburg Village is a newly constructed neighborhood that connects to the Town Center by a walking trail. It has 51 single-family homes ranging from about 2,000 to 3,000 square feet and 197 townhouses ranging from around 1,700 to 2,000. The median townhouse price is $430,000, compared to Raleigh’s $370,000.

Attending Cabarrus County Schools

Cabarrus County Schools receives an A-minus grade on Niche. Hickory Ridge Elementary, Middle, and High School are close together, located along Hickory Ridge Road. All three schools score an A-minus or higher. In affiliation with the National Academy Foundation, Hickory Ridge High offers the four-year Academy of Financial Technology program. "Some of the students in Harrisburg may now have to go schools in Concord,” Stetsky says. “They build the houses quicker than they build the schools.” There are also a handful of charter options and several private schools. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte's 1,000-acre campus is about 4 miles from Town Center. Rowan-Cabarrus Community College also has a campus nearby.

Holiday celebration at Harrisburg Park

One of the town’s six parks and facilities, Harrisburg Park is a 64-acre green space with five multi-purpose fields, a playground and a splash pad. It houses the Harrisburg branch of the Cabarrus County Library and connects to Harris Depot Park by a walking and biking trail. Concert series, movie nights, holiday celebrations, craft shows and cultural events often occur at Harrisburg Park. Veterans Park is a replica of how the National Archives Rotunda displays the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights in Washington D.C. The Harrisburg Family YMCA is located in Town Hall.

The town’s biggest celebration is the Fourth of July, which features a three-day festival with music, food, fireworks and a pageant. "There’s also a parade where nearly 30,000 people line Highway 49 on the morning of July 4th,” Nestor says. The town comes together for most major holidays. Bags in the ‘Burg is a cornhole tournament that raises money for the local YMCA.

Shopping expanding to Interstate 485

“The Town is intentional about enhancing the quality of life for our residents by collaborating, planning, and investing in resources to create a community of choice,” Nestor says. An example of this is the Town Center, where there are many new shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. The Harrisburg Farmers Market is held at Harris Depot Park. There is more shopping along North Carolina Highway 49, including chain restaurants, grocery stores and pharmacies. Residents will have to drive a bit further to Concord for big box stores. “It’s starting to spread out closer to Interstate 485,” Stetsky says of the retail scene.

Uptown Charlotte is about 20 miles southwest of Harrisburg on North Carolina Highway 49, which runs through the center of town. The highway connects to Interstate 485, also known as Charlotte Outerbelt. Concord is about 10 miles northeast on Highway 49, which experiences heavy traffic on the weekends and evenings. While it technically falls within Concord’s city limits, Charlotte Motor Speedway is 3 miles from Harrisburg’s town center.
