A tranquil environment in northern Harrisonburg
When asked why Harrisonburg is such a popular destination for potential homebuyers, Realtor Stephan Gleason says, “Whenever you come up over the mountain on I-64, you just breathe a sigh of relief because it’s so peaceful.” The tranquil ambiance of the Shenandoah Valley intersects with convenient access to Harrisonburg in Harmony Heights. The neighborhood creates the northern tip of The Friendly City, and it’s the last subdivision before the landscape turns into the acres of tan and green agricultural fields that stretch across the Valley. It’s also just north of Eastern Mennonite University, the small private college that functions as the more laidback counterpart to James Madison University, a large public university close to downtown Harrisonburg. “EMU doesn’t have the same footprint as JMU. There’s a much quieter vibe with more of a rural atmosphere up in the northern part of Harrisonburg,” says Lesley Gleason, a Realtor who operates the Virginia Mountain to Valley Living YouTube channel with her husband, fellow Realtor Stephan Gleason.

Colonial Revivals and New Traditional homes on well-maintained lots
The curving streets feature homes with neat lawns landscaped with rounded shrubbery. Roads slowly gain altitude, so some houses have clear views of the Valley below, while all enjoy views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Single-family homes built in the late 1900s appear in New Traditional and Colonial Revival designs. These are often priced between $500,000 and $700,000. There are also communities of townhouses built in the early 2000s. Townhouses are priced between $230,000 and $350,000.

City parks and hiking trails in the Shenandoah Valley
Harmony Heights itself doesn't have any public parks, but there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreational activities nearby. EMU’s Quad is just south of the neighborhood, so residents can take a casual stroll along the concrete walkways or sit on a shaded bench on the peaceful campus. Harrisonburg has several parks with athletic courts and walking paths, which are all under 5 miles from the neighborhood. Purcell Park is a go-to for pickleball and nature walks; there’s also a large wooden playground. Westover Park has a 21-hole disc golf course that winds up and down hills and through the trees, while Hillandale Park has basketball courts, a sand volleyball court, picnic areas and a playground. Locals often spend their days on the Shenandoah River or hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains, as both are only about 25 miles east on Route 33. Fishing, kayaking and tubing are popular on the river, while Shenandoah National Park is a go-to for scenic drives and rocky hikes. Massanutten Resort, a ski resort with a double black diamond trail, is about 16 miles east.
Purcell Park has three tennis courts for residents to enjoy.

The Harmony Square Shopping Center has a couple of laid-back restaurants and stores. Mornings call for a bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich on a New York-style bagel from Mr. J’s Bagels and Deli. For lunch, there’s unlimited chips and salsa to accompany fajitas and burritos at Los Marquez Mexican Restaurant. There’s also a Food Lion for convenient grocery trips. Residents can take advantage of their proximity to vegetable farms and buy fresh produce and herbs at the Willow Run Farmstand. Downtown Harrisonburg, which is about 3 miles south, is the destination for a more diverse array of restaurant choices. Locals can order Asian-inspired dishes at Beyond Restaurant and Lounge, burgers and fries from Jack Brown’s Beer and Burger Joint, or sandwiches from Lola’s Delicatessen. Downtown has small businesses like The Yellow Button, which is a clothing boutique, and Walkabout Outfitter, which stocks outdoor recreational supplies. Farm festivities and college sports nearby
Harmony Heights has convenient access to both seasonal activities and festivals downtown. In October, locals celebrate the fall season at Back Home on the Farm, a 240-acre farm located about 2 miles west of the neighborhood. Community members wander through the corn maze, pick their own pumpkins from the patch, and sip apple cider as their kids ride the carousel or pet goats at the petting zoo. For more of a city feel, there’s downtown Harrisonburg and James Madison University. “It’s a smaller city, but you don’t feel like there’s a lack for anything. You don’t have professional sports teams, but there’s JMU football, baseball and college theater, so you can attend events,” Lesley Gleason says. JMU’s Forbes Center for the Performing Arts hosts symphonic concerts, plays and dance recitals, and the community flocks to Bridgeforth Stadium to watch JMU football games on Saturdays in the fall.

Drivers merge onto I-81 to go to D.C. or Richmond
There are a couple of bus stops operated by the Harrisonburg Department of Public Transportation, but Harmony Heights is largely car-dependent. Driving south on Harpine Highway connects residents to downtown Harrisonburg in 3 miles, and driving 6 miles south takes them to the RMH Medical Center. Interstate 81 is close by to take locals north toward Fairfax and south toward Richmond. “There are a lot of new grads that will stay in the area because they get sucked in by the beautiful mountain views and outdoor lifestyle,” says Emily Winter, Director of Marketing for the Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance. “We have a lot of remote workers, and you can drive to Richmond or D.C. for major airports, but we also have the Shenandoah Regional Airport if you need to fly out for a quick meeting.” The airport is about 18 miles south of Harmony Heights.
