Hinton is a rural community right outside of Harrisonburg
Hinton offers rural living on the eastern edge of the George Washington National Forest. Rolling grain crops and vast livestock pastures cover this Rockingham County area. Locals can spend their days exploring Blue Ridge Mountain hiking trails, densely shaded by white pine and eastern hemlock trees. The Dry River flows through the community, creating swimming holes and fishing lakes. A few convenience stores and century-old churches line the winding roads, but besides these places, Hinton doesn’t have much else. “It’s practically removed from society,” says Gail Mitchell, a real estate agent with Old Dominion Realty who has sold several properties in the area. “People move here to buy farmland and get out of the city.” But with Harrisonburg just 7 miles east, grocery stores and a charming downtown district aren’t too far away.
Houses were built between the 1800s and early 2000s in Hinton
Hinton’s oldest properties include farmhouses dating back to the late 1800s. Mid-20th-century cottages and contemporary cabins built throughout the early 2000s are also common. Farmland and residential lot sizes range from 1 to 100 acres. The median single-family home price is around $290,000, which is lower than Harrisonburg’s $389,000 median. Empty lots typically cost between $40,000 and $65,000, depending on acreage. Residents should be aware that the area can experience forest fires, and houses near the Dry River may be in flood zones. Hinton's CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Blue Ridge Mountain recreation is a big part of life here
Locals will find several hiking trails, fishing lakes and camping spots. “Outdoor activity is one of the most important aspects of life here,” Mitchell says. “Some people will even carve out their own trails if they own a ton of land.” On the Virginia-West Virginia border, the 2-and-a-half-mile-long High Knob Trail climbs through the Blue Ridge Mountains and reaches a nonoperational stone fire lookout tower built in 1939. Hikers can sit on its catwalk to watch sunsets dip behind Spruce Knob, West Virginia’s tallest peak. Tent campsites surround Skidmore Reservoir, where anglers can launch kayaks and catch trout, catfish and largemouth bass. Jeeps and motorbikes race across dirt paths at the Rocky Run ATV Trail. Riven Rock Park is a swimming hole along Dry River’s pebbly shoreline. Hinton has multiple houses of worship, many of which are Mennonite churches. Mount Horeb United Methodist Church has been in its Gothic Revival-style building since 1875.
Kids go to Rockingham County Public Schools
Hinton is zoned for Rockingham County Public Schools. Kids can attend Ottobine Elementary, which earns a C-plus from Niche, and Wilbur S. Pence Middle, graded a B-minus. They may continue to A-minus-rated Turner Ashby High, where extracurriculars include forensics, debate and Shakespeare competition. Eastern Mennonite University and James Madison University are about 6 miles east.
Restaurants and grocery stores are in Harrisonburg
A gas pump sits outside Hinton Market & Deli, which is attached to the community's post office. Though locals will find a few more convenience stores and some farm stands in the area, Hinton doesn’t have many commercial options. “You can buy snacks in Hinton, and that’s about it,” Mitchell says. “All the restaurants and stores people go to are in Harrisonburg, and it only takes about 15 minutes to get there.” Harrisonburg has a Walmart Supercenter and an Aldi. Pizza joints, college bars and coffee shops fill the Italianate-style buildings downtown. Sentara RMH Medical Center, also in Harrisonburg, is the closest hospital.
Cars and tractors share Hinton's road
Hinton is a car-dependent community, and there are no public transportation options or sidewalks. Farmers often drive along the rural roads, which are sometimes unmarked or made of gravel. “It’s pretty common to pass somebody driving a tractor here,” Mitchell says. U.S. Route 33 crosses through the community and leads directly to Harrisonburg. Hinton has several commercial farms, including the Virginia Poultry Growers Cooperative turkey processing plant. The 92,000-square-foot facility is on Route 33 and employs over 500 people. Shenandoah Valley Airport, 20 miles south, offers daily commercial flights to Charlotte.
